About MatterHackers

MatterHackers Review

There’s no word that writers despise more than “thing.” If you can use it then there’s another word that better describes what you’re writing about.

However, there’s no word that encapsulates what 3D printers produce better than “things,” because they can make just about anything, so long as you have the right materials.

You can’t just go to any Bobby Basic or Aubrey Average 3D printing shop and expect to buy equipment that can, for lack of a better term, turn stuff into things with a purpose.

To transform materials into tangible objects, you need to acquire the goods to make it happen and there’s no better distributor of such goods as MatterHackers.

They built themselves as a distributor of everything you could need for digital fabrication. They sell digital printers, filaments, CNC mills, and more. Furthermore, they’ve earned more than 125k followers on Instagram.

In this MatterHackers review, I’ll tell you everything that you need to know about the brand before you decide to shop with them, including information about their products, their prices, and what customers have to say about them.

Overview Of MatterHackers

MatterHackers Review

The team behind the California-based MatterHackers has been in and around 3D printing for nearly as long as the practice has been possible.

This has given them the insight to curate products that appeal to all levels of 3D printing mastery. As such, they’re just as good of a hub for experts as they are for beginners.

Before I really get into the details of their products in this MatterHackers review, let’s cover a few of the brand’s highlights:

MatterHackers Review
  • Robust selection of machines and materials
  • Free shipping on all US orders over $35
  • Clearance section of products available on their website
  • 30-day return policy

As I mentioned in the introduction of this MatterHackers review, the company sells everything related to digital fabrication and printing. They have a wealth of products covering all portions of the process, from the machines to the materials to the accessories.

MatterHackers 3D Filament Review

I’ll use this section of my MatterHackers review to tell you about some of their top-selling 3D filaments.

MatterHackers Black PRO Series Tough PLA Filament – 1.75mm (1kg) Review

The MatterHackers Black PRO Series Tough PLA Filament – 1.75mm (1kg) sits at the intersection between strength and ease of use, meaning that it sits at the sweetest spot on the spectrum.

It has a printing temperature of 220±10°C and more impact strength than regular PLA.

The other groovy thing about the MatterHackers Black PRO Series Tough PLA Filament – 1.75mm (1kg) is that it’s currently on sale. You can pick it up for only $46 instead of $57.

MatterHackers Ultimaker Red ABS Filament – 2.85mm (0.75kg) Review

The next item in my MatterHackers review was designed specifically to combat two of the most common problems that occur during 3D printing – warping and inconsistent layering.

The MatterHackers Ultimaker Red ABS Filament – 2.85mm (0.75kg) is made from a strong and hard material that works to deny both of those inconveniences from occurring.

It’s also available for sale, coming in at $50 rather than $69.

MatterHackers Royal Blue MH Build Series PLA Filament – 1.75mm (1kg) Review

This MatterHackers 3D filament is a budget-friendly option made to meet consumers at their price level.

The MatterHackers Royal Blue MH Build Series PLA Filament – 1.75mm (1kg) is made from renewable corn starch and tapioca starch and comes in a multitude of colors. A single roll costs $21.

MatterHackers Blue Raspberry MatterHackers Quantum PLA Filament – 1.75mm (0.75kg) Review

The final item in my MatterHackers review is the most artistic of all the PLA filaments I’ve covered. Every option comes in a cascading blend of two different colors. I’m partial to the blue raspberry color blend, but maybe that’s because I’m addicted to Kool-Aid.

You can pick up the MatterHackers Blue Raspberry MatterHackers Quantum PLA Filament – 1.75mm (0.75kg) on sale for $30. Normally, it costs $37.

Who Is MatterHackers For?

MatterHackers are for those who live in the United States and want to dip their feet deeper into the world of digital fabrication.

MatterHackers Reviews: What Do Customers Think?

MatterHackers Review

Here are some average MatterHackers review scores generated from customers taken from various websites:

  • Facebook: 4.2/5 stars based on more than 95 pieces of customer feedback
  • Knoji: 4.1/5 stars based on more than 50 pieces of customer feedback
  • Yelp: 4/5 stats based on more than 20 pieces of customer feedback

Beyond the positive notes about the product, many customers who left MatterHackers reviews spoke highly of the company’s correspondence when it came to dealing with shipping issues. Here’s how one buyer explained their situation:

Had a small mishap with an online order, I notified them via email. Shortly after,  they reached out to me personally, left a voicemail letting me know that the matter was taken care of and expressed their apologies…that simple customer service experience alone will have me ordering all of my 3D supplies through MatterHackers from here on out.”

Other buyers complimented the MatterHackers staff, saying that they knew what they were talking about and were eager to help shoppers. This is a testimonial that I read on Reddit from a regular:

As a company? I’ve had good experiences with Matterhackers. Having dealt with some of their staff that supported one of my delta printers, they were quite professional and knowledgeable about the landscape, often going above and beyond.

It’s with a heavy heart that I must confess that not everyone wrote positive MatterHackers reviews. There were a number of people who said that the company shipped products out much later than advertised, shipped the wrong products entirely, and went AWOL went customers tried to speak with them.

Most of these issues stemmed from purchases conducted on the MatterHackers website. Those that shopped at the brand’s retail locations were, on the whole, more satisfied with their experience, reporting great customer service and support from the staff.

The next MatterHackers review includes a piece of advice I found in many positive testimonials – visit the physical store if you can, but it seems like the staff there is more helpful than the brand’s online customer service representatives:

Great store, if you’re looking to buy a printer buy it here even if the online prices elsewhere may be competitive. It’s worth the trip and whatever minuscule extra amount you may spend here and I highly suggest buying in person if possible. Even before going to the store I called about some questions regarding a printer they sold and they went out of their way to answer, research and verify their answers for me (Thanks again Gavan).

Is MatterHackers Legit?

MatterHackers Review

There are the shipping issues that some people highlighted in their MatterHackers review that I feel must be included here, as they’ll greatly influence how you view the company.

Besides that, they weren’t any red flags that popped up, so it’s safe to say that this brand is legit.

Is MatterHackers Worth It?

MatterHackers Review

MatterHackers is worth looking into. The shipping problems may be a deterrent to some, but there were still plenty of buyers who had extremely positive experiences with the brand.

MatterHackers is definitely worth it.
