APMEX Review

Some people like to spend their money frivolously, others like to collect. And if you’re really savvy, you collect items that grow in value over time, like gold and silver coins and bars. APMEX, which stands for the American Precious Metals Exchange, offers tangible investments.

Their collection of precious metal pieces is categorized by labels like “rare” and “minted,” and includes a stand-out variety of jewelry, currency, and even ancient coins. Considering they’ve been featured in popular publications like Hype Beast and the Daily Times, it came as no surprise to find their social community totaling over 111k

Wondering what this company is all about and what it can offer? My APMEX review can help. Here, I’ll guide you through details about its bestsellers, feedback, discounts, and more, so you can decide if it’s the right choice for you.

Overview of APMEX

APMEX Review

APMEX was founded by Scott Thomas in 2000. Over the past 20+ years, it has become one of the largest companies to buy and sell gold and silver, sourcing and stocking a fantastic array of other precious metals and curious tokens.

Starting as a small shop, APMEX moved the bulk of its business online so that folks around the world could get in on this money-generating trade. It’s now available in over 60 countries. And because they know that money’s made round to go around, they’ve partnered with the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma to do their part.

Now that you know a little more about the brand, let’s move my APMEX review right along. The highlights are up next.

To give you an idea of what the company offers online, I’ll take you through a selection of their most popular gold and silver coins and bars next.

APMEX Silver Review

The top-selling silver pieces are a mix of coins from around the globe, originating in places like America, Canada, Mexico, and Great Britain. There are over 100 silver coins in the collection, and you’ll have the option to buy them individually or by the bag.

APMEX 1878-1904 Morgan Silver Dollar Cull (Random Year) Review

The exact 1878-1904 Morgan Silver Dollar Cull (Random Year) that will arrive at your door is a mystery, but all of them are minted by the US Mint and are made from 0.7734 oz of silver. If you’re a numismatic coin collector, you’ll likely appreciate their date and the time they would have been in rotation in the US.

Each APMEX silver coin arrives in a plastic bag for protection, but if you order in quantities of 20, yours will arrive in a plastic tube.

Featuring Lady Liberty on one side and a bald eagle on an olive branch on the other, these historic coins will display considerable wear and tear, so keep that in mind when you inspect them. Prices start at $30 per coin.

APMEX Gold Review

In the brand’s best-selling collection of gold, there are just 100 coins from around the globe. The most affordable and highest priced are both from Mexico, ranging from $200-$3,000 in ratios of 1/20 to solid gold. See below for details on the best-selling gold coin.

APMEX Great Britain Gold Sovereign Coins (Random) Avg Circ Review

This is a coin you won’t want to leave out of your display. Weighing 0.2354 oz, the Great Britain Gold Sovereign Coins (Random) Avg Circa range in date, and which one you get is a mystery. A stand-out piece for your collection, each APMEX gold coin will be in average circulated condition or better.

All of them feature a picture of St. George riding a horse and slaying a dragon, an image created by sculptor Benedetto Pistrucci, while the other features the given era’s monarch. Minted by The Royal Mint, this British coin rings up at $429.

APMEX Silver Coins Review

From American to Canadian to Austrian, the silver coin collection holds over 11,000 different types of coins. Rich with interesting and traditional pieces, prices start at under $1 and go up to $61,000 for an 1872 liberty seated dollar. I’ll tell you all about the brand’s bestseller next.

APMEX Reviews: What Do Customers Think?

APMEX Review

When buying anything online, doing your research is important. But when it comes to buying something valuable, it’s critical. To help make your life easier, I’ve researched for you, and in this section of my APMEX review, you’ll hear exactly what the buying experience is like from the mouths of customers.

I’d like to start this section off with some feedback from the brand’s website. Here’s how each of my featured products scored on their website:

  • 1978-1904 Morgan Silver Dollar: 4.8/5 stars from 20 reviews
  • Great Britain Gold Coins: 4.8/5 stars from 67 reviews
  • Australia Gold Kookaburra: 5/5 stars from 2 reviews
  • Silver Bar: 4.9/5 stars from 442 reviews
  • Gold Bar: 4.8/5 stars from 36 reviews

A lot of the reviews here were short and sweet. One devoted customer wrote: “Easy and fast. I have been using APMEX for years and they are my #1 spot for buying metals online.”

In another APMEX review, a customer wrote: “Easy purchase process, great customer service.” And the final comment I’ll include here from their site reads: “Great selection. Good prices. Ships on time.”

Sometimes a few words are all that’s needed to get a point across, and from the three APMEX reviews I’ve included above, we can learn that the brand is loved for its customer service, selection, and reliable delivery. Is this case for all customers? I checked out Consumer Affairs to find out.

There, the company averaged 3.8/5 stars after 174 reviews. The first APMEX review we’ll look at reads: “I love APMEX with their selection of coins, etc. Very simple to buy from them. Customer service could not be friendlier. Stuff usually ships out quickly…Good, reliable company couldn’t be nicer to deal with. Highly recommend.”

The same APMEX review also warned: “Just be careful where you ship your order to, I’m reading some reviews by people trashing APMEX because someone snatched their package. Wait, how is this the fault of APMEX?”

APMEX fully insures your order until it’s delivered. This can be problematic if it does indeed make it to your door and ends up being stolen, but unfortunately, people steal packages all the time and though the brand uses discreet packaging, if they read the sender’s information, they’ll know where it’s coming from.

Track your delivery and make sure you’re home to receive it or opt for a signature requirement on your delivery preferences, that way it won’t be dropped off if you aren’t home.

With that bit out of the way, let’s check out another APMEX review from Consumer Affairs. This one said: “The service has been incredible. Orders are processed quickly and usually received before the promised date.”

So far, there’s been more positive feedback than negative, so let’s look at Trustpilot for a general view of the company. There, 95% of over 7.7k buyers said they had either an excellent or great experience with the company.

However, APMEX’s Trustpilot profile has a below-average score of 2.2/5 stars. Why? Because their customer service team hasn’t replied to the 3-5% of reviews classified as negative.

Trustpilot takes things like this seriously, and I’m not sure why APMEX wouldn’t respond to these comments, especially when they respond to 100% of them on the Better Business Bureau. Nevertheless, here’s one final APMEX review to round off the section.

“APMEX is amazing. Adam Trigg ext 239 is the best to deal with when buying online super smart about all the gold and silver questions u may ever have. Adam has guided me into a lot of smart buys and answers any questions I may have. Service is great product you never have to wonder about. APMEX rocks.”

Unlike the other comments I included above, this one goes into more detail about what it’s like to deal with the brand’s staff. We’ve read that the team is helpful, but this tidbit explains how.

Based on this APMEX review and all others we’ve checked out, I can confidently say that people have great experiences with the brand. It looks like they need a little work in the customer service department when handling negative feedback, but from what I’ve seen so far, the majority look to be satisfied with their overall experience.

Is APMEX Legit?

APMEX Review

In the previous section of my APMEX review, I mentioned that the brand responds to 100% of complaints on the BBB. Because they’ve done this, they have an A score there despite the fact they’ve received a total of 103 complaints over the past three years.

While they have responded to all, not many of them are marked as resolved even though in quite a few cases APMEX issued refunds. Still, customers weren’t quite placated. Lost or stolen packages appear to be the most common point of negative feedback on the BBB, along with what some say are inaccurate images on the brand’s website.

These complaints don’t make the brand illegitimate, but they are a chance to practice caution and pay more attention when shopping. As I said previously, it looks like APMEX has refunded many orders but customers haven’t marked their issues as resolved.

Is APMEX Worth It?

APMEX Review

I know the prior section was heavy, but it’s always a good idea to weigh the pros against the cons. In this company’s case, there are many more pros than cons, and many more customers who experienced great service than there was that reported poor service.

Is APMEX a reliable service to buy from? Thousands of buyers say yes, and that they have trusted the brand for years. To give you peace of mind, they also have an expedited free shipping option, discreet packaging, and package insurance.

APMEX Promotions & Discounts

APMEX Review

Collectible coins and bars only increase in value, so technically, just by buying them, you’re making money. Since I understand that saving money now is equally important, I searched the company’s website during my APMEX review to see what deals I could drum up.

APMEX has a membership club you can join for rewards, early access to sales, and special offers. If you don’t plan on buying from the company frequently, you can shop for discounts in the deals section. No APMEX coupon is required. Some coins are marked down by as much as 24%.

APMEX Inc. is owned by Scott Thomas, who serves as the company’s president and has since the day he founded it in 2000.

Does APMEX ship internationally?

Yes, APMEX does ship internationally. While there isn’t an international version of the brand’s website, there is a foreign buying guide with details about shipping, returns, and taxes.

If you live in the US, you’ll find the relevant shipping and returns policies just ahead in my APMEX review.

What is APMEX’s Shipping Policy?

If you spend over $199, your order will be shipped for free. Spend under that amount, and shipping costs $10. Also, Citadel orders will be charged a $10 shipping fee if they are over $500. Here’s what else you should know about shipping:

  • Most order ship out within three business days if you paid with a credit card, bank wire, or Bitcoin

  • Certain orders qualify for next-day shipping, but not all

To track your order, wait for your shipping confirmation email to arrive in your inbox. In it, you will find a tracking number which you can click on to be taken to the shipping carrier’s website. Once there, the carrier will display where your order is and provide an estimated delivery date.

What is APMEX’s Return Policy?

APMEX offers a 7-day return policy on everything they sell. This means you have 7 days from the date your order arrives to inspect it and decide if you want to keep it. After that date, your order cannot be returned.

To start the process, you will need to contact the brand by live chat, email, or telephone. You’ll find the details of each method in the last section of my APMEX review. The remaining details of the return policy are as follows:

  1. Your items need to be in their original packaging
  2. After you contact customer service, they will give you a RAN and instructions on how to return your items
  3. Refunds are not processed until after APMEX receives your items, inspects, and approved them
  4. Shipping and handling fees aren’t refundable
  5. You are responsible for all return shipping costs

Note that APMEX may charge you a $50 restocking fee or 10% of your order price. A $50 processing fee may be applied to your refund as well. If returning bullion items, you might be asked to pay for any market loss that occurs by the time the company receives your return. Any market gain is considered APMEX property.

If you receive an item with a pricing or typographic error, APMEX may notify you of the change and cancel your order.
