About Ethique

Ethique Review

Ethique is a New Zealand-based company selling natural and eco-friendly shampoos, conditioners, cleansers, and hand washes to customers in the US, UK, Canada, and beyond. What sets their products apart? They all come in bar form – entirely plastic-free!

This company has gained a massive customer following for using plant-derived ingredients to make sustainable, cruelty-free cleansing bars. This new take on toiletries has been featured in magazines like Time and Forbes, and over 132k people on Facebook and 130k on Instagram are following their social accounts.

My Ethique review will give you a look at how this brand developed, what their best-selling products are all about, and what customers are saying about this inventive company.

Let’s start with their unique brand story, which all began with founder Brianne West.

Overview of Ethique

Ethique Review

Ethique’s story is as unique as their products. The company began in 2012, when New Zealander Brianne West started making shampoo bars as a university science student, along with her mom – who still does R&D for the company.

West explains that she was frustrated with the amount of wasteful packaging and carbon emissions necessary to get shampoo and conditioners into stores and homes when most of what they contain is just water!

Brianne began making solid versions – far kinder on the planet to produce, package, and ship – and selling her formulations, finding success fast.

She soon entered a business competition at her school that helped her to develop her business plan and find her first investor. After a very successful funding effort on PledgeMe, Brianne hired her first employees and began making her shampoo bars full-time.

Soon enough, Brianne’s concept attracted the attention of Forbes and Huffington Post, and has even received the support of celebrities like Britney Spears and Ashton Kutcher.

Ethique’s products aren’t just plastic-free. They also follow the company’s 4 basic ingredient rules, designed to make all of their products gentle on people and the planet:

  1. Free from palm oil and its derivatives
  2. Plant-based and cruelty-free
  3. Biodegradable and sustainably produced
  4. Not known to cause any health risks

The brand also tries to conserve water, both in the making of their solid products and by not using plastic – the production of which leads to a significant amount of water waste.

Ethique also operates using a direct trade process with producers wherever possible, ensuring that their company is personally dealing with the people who help bring their products to life, and that all involved are compensated and treated fairly.

Now, Ethique is proud to have saved 13 million plastic bottles from circulation thanks to the sale of their solid products, and are further offsetting their company’s carbon emissions through tree-planting initiatives.

Ethique Shampoo Bar Professor Curl Review

Ethique doesn’t just cater to straight hair – their Professor Curl Shampoo Bar is meant to soften your curls and make them easier to style, too.

This Ethique shampoo bar is loaded with natural plant oils like shea butter, cocoa butter, and lemongrass oils, all designed to give your curls good slip, softness, and definition.

The Professor Curl bar is also free from more synthetic ingredients like sulfates, silicones, and waxes, ingredients that are tough on the planet and on your curls.

To use this, and any other Ethique shampoo bar, wet your hair and then rub the shampoo bar over it several times. Use your hands to work the shampoo into your roots and down the length of your hair. Then, rinse out!

Ethique Products Review

Ethique has kicked harmful chemicals to the curb and formulates their skincare and hygiene products with good-for-you ingredients

Up ahead in this Ethique review, I will now check out their best-selling deodorant and hair conditioner!

Ethique Deodorant Solid Botanica Review

This Ethique deodorant promises to give you fresh-smelling pits without aluminum or baking soda. The Deodorant Solid Botanica looks just like a bar of soap and has a lovely light purple color and lavender-vanilla scent.

I found that the Deodorant Solid Botanica counteracts bad odors with nature-based ingredients like bamboo, magnesium hydroxide, and zinc oxide. These ingredients soak up sweat and sebum, and stop odor-causing bacteria from spreading

Even though the bamboo in this bar is known for absorbing nearly 200% of its weight in moisture, it’s a deodorant – not an antiperspirant – meaning it’ll fight BO without blocking your sweat glands.

This product also uses jojoba and sweet almond oil, two Vitamin E-rich oils to keep your skin smooth and happy.

Buy a 2.47 oz bar of Deodorant Solid Botanica for $13.

Ethique Conditioner The Guardian Review

The Ethique Conditioner The Guardian bar will guard your hair from factors that will dry it out and leave it looking fried and lifeless.

The Ethique Conditioner Bar is designed to be “deeply hydrating” thanks to its array of plant-derived oils. They include:

  • Coconut oil
  • Cocoa butter
  • Lime oil

This Ethique conditioner also has hair-friendly Vitamin B5. It’s ideal for people whose hair type needs an extra boost of moisture or whose tresses puts up with a lot of stress from the environment or heat-styling.

Ethique explains that their Conditioner The Guardian Bar is so moisturizing that it can also be used for shaving or in the shower as a body moisturizer.

Ethique Conditioner The Guardian comes in a 2.12 oz bar – the equivalent of five bottles of regular conditioner – and is available for $17.

Ethique Reviews: What Do Customers Think?

Ethique Review

Ethique shares customer reactions on their official website and it seems like buyers are loving this brand! Most Ethique reviews mention their products’ lovely scents, nice feel on the skin, and good results.

One customer who tried the Sweet Orange and Vanilla Solid Bodywash writes in her Ethique review, I love how the scent is not overwhelming and subtle. It lathers well also. More than anything, im so glad it does not irritate my skin and does not affect my eczema.”

A shopper trying the St. Clements Solid Shampoo Bar for Oily Hair loves that this product thoroughly cleaned their hair, leaving a subtle fragrance without the fake ingredients.

She shared in her Ethique review, “It doesn’t weigh down my hair or feel oily after a day. My husband loves how it lathers. While there is a scent, it’s not overwhelming like others. I tried other Ethique shampoo bars and this is still my favorite.”

Similarly, a customer who bought the brand’s top seller, the Heali Kiwi Shampoo Bar was impressed at how well the bar delivered on its claims: “ I’ve been using the Heali Kiwi for about a month now and have seen a lot of improvement in dandruff, scalp build up and oiliness between washes. I was really surprised at how well it cleaned my hair too, considering how gentle it is on my skin! This is the first product like this I’ve tried and I’m so glad I did, it’s a Great product – I highly recommend!”

Another customer, who picked up The Guardian Conditioner Bar loves the scent and the way it imparts intense moisture without leaving your hair oily: “Not only is this easy to use, moisturizing without feeling greasy, IT SMELLS AMAZING. I can’t express how much I love the scent. It’s like the lime slushies or lollies you get as a kid. It makes me look forward to using it and I will shamelessly admit that I have to hold myself back from taking a bite. Definitely need to repurchase.”

This company also shares customer feedback on their official Facebook page, where they have a stellar 4.9/5 star rating based on over 50 reviews.

One customer loved this brand’s hair and skin bars for how they leave her hair feeling fuller, reporting in her Ethique review, “… I’m currently on my first set, and wow! Not only does my hair feel cleaner and healthier, but it has more volume and I’m shedding less than I normally would in the shower.”

Another customer hugely appreciates this brand’s mission while also feeling relieved to find products that didn’t irritate her skin.

She shares in her Ethique review on Facebook, “I absolutely love this brand. I love Ethique’s mission and how they give back to the planet. I also love that they reduce plastic and make it easy for me to reduce plastic, too…I was absolutely floored to find that Ethique’s products not only didn’t bother my hair and skin, but actually improved both.”

This brand also has a solid 4.2/5 star rating on TrustPilot, based on 12 Ethique reviews. These customers generally loved the brand’s responsible approach to creating products, and the way their hair and skin felt after using their bars.

Is Ethique Legit?

Ethique Review

Yes! This company is reliably delivering their eco products to customers in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and NZ. While writing this Ethique review, I didn’t find any red flags that suggest the brand is anything but legit.

Is Ethique Worth It?

Ethique Review

Based on what I found in the course of our Ethique review, this brand is checking a ton of good business boxes!

In addition to formulating products that people find appealing and effective, and making them accessible and affordable for customers, they are also delivering these products in a socially and environmentally conscious manner that deserves some credit.

This brand not only allows you to make your daily care routines plastic-free, but they also allow you to feel confident that the purchases you’re making are actively contributing to a better world by reducing water waste, avoiding harmful ingredients, and using business practices that are kind to animals and foster good working conditions.

To wrap up this segment of my Ethique review, I’m happy to recommend this fabulous eco brand.

Ethique vs Hibar

Ethique Review

These brands have a lot in common. Both offer solid versions of body cleansers, skincare, shampoos, and conditioners. The pricing of these products is also similar – Hibar tends to charge a little less but their bars are smaller than Ethique’s, and are the equivalent of two 350 ml bottles, not three.

Both brands use natural ingredients and, of course, don’t have any plastic in their packaging. They are also cruelty-free.

One major difference between these brands is that Ethique offsets their carbon emissions (and is actually ‘climate positive”) and is a certified B corporation, while Hibar hasn’t made such commitments. I wasn’t able to find any mention of Hibar’s manufacturing process or determine if they use any fair trade practices.
