About Penfield

Penfield Review

Unless you’re a member of a nudist colony you probably don’t leave the house without clothing. Depending on where you live you may have to cycle through four different wardrobes, with each one suiting the season at hand.

Whether you’re trying to stay warm during the winter or kicking back in breezy summers, Penfield makes outdoor apparel for every month. Their rustic designs have raked in over 51k Instagram followers.

The only thing worse than leaving the house with a bad outfit is leaving the house with a bad outfit that doesn’t even keep you warm. Our Penfield review will investigate the company’s history, their products, their production methods, and consult customer feedback to see if they can keep you looking sharp and feeling comfortable.

Overview of Penfield

Penfield Review

Harvey Gross formed Penfield in 1975 out of his admiration for down wear. His love wasn’t spurred by fascination, no. He lived in Hudson, Massachusetts, where the temperatures regularly drop below freezing according to our Penfield review research.

With that in mind, Gross sought out to combine down’s functionality with contemporary design sensibilities. It proved to be a hit as it only took the company four years to expand their horizons beyond the United States borders.

Penfield has been instrumental in shaping the outdoors aesthetic with their down, fleece, and nylon products. They’ve paired Ivy League prestige with a previously untapped focus on insulation. If you bought a Penfield product, you knew you were investing in both class and comfort.

Today, Penfield products are made for more than outdoor exploration. Outerwear and streetwear have become enmeshed in one another, thrusting Penfield into newfound relevancy.

This relevancy caused Brand Machine Group, an English clothing specialist company, to purchase Penfield in 2021. It seems this purchase has only helped Penfield elevate their standing among both fashionistas and cross country skiers alike.

The following section of our Penfield review is for readers with short attention spans or those who prefer Sparknotes over reading an actual book. That’s right, we’re going to summarize the brand’s highlights in a tidy little list:

Highlights

  • Offers a pleasing line of clothing for both men and women
  • The company was instrumental in developing the Northern American outerwear aesthetic
  • International shipping available
  • Some products are made from recycled materials
  • Sustainable delivery packages
  • Generous 30-day return policy
Penfield Review

Penfield offers a wide range of apparel for all seasons. That means that although some of the pieces in their men’s and women’s lines are tailored for specific climates, many of them suit various occasions because of their accessible designs.

Penfield Men’s Clothing Review

The Penfield review team has selected some of our favorite men’s products that we want to share with you. Funnily enough, the pieces included in our Penfield Men’s reviews are also among their best-selling items. That’s a sign that customers have good taste.

Penfield Maynard Men’s Fleece Review

The Penfield Maynard Men’s Fleece is as classic of a design and fit as you can imagine. It’s like you reached into the dictionary, pulled out the word “comfortable” and sewed the letters into a garment.

This charming fleece jacket interior and exterior are made of 100% polyester. It features a half-length zipper so that you can release some steam if you feel, or look, a bit too hot.

All three Penfield Maynard Men’s Fleece colors – navy, mustard, and prairie – are available for $170 each.

Penfield Catch Men’s Short Sleeve Shirt Review

Who said outerwear only refers to winter? Summer is the perfect season to step out of the confines of your apartment and into the great outdoors, which you’ll want to do in the Penfield Catch Men’s Short Sleeve Shirt.

The shirt carries the varsity spirit of Penfield’s original products without taking itself too seriously. You’ll look regal and relaxed on the back of a small fishing boat out in cottage country with a pair of dockers.

This item fits regularly and features a delightful fish design that runs along its entirety. Both the mustard and white pearl colors are equally enchanting.

Normally the 100% cotton Penfield Catch Men’s Short Sleeve Shirt is $90, but our Penfield review staff found that it’s currently available for $45. That means it’s half-priced, baby!

Penfield Backprint Men’s Short Sleeve T-Shirt Review

What good is outerwear if you don’t layer up? It’s easy to throw on a tattered old t-shirt, thinking that nobody is going to see your under layers anyways, but why not consider every part of your outfit?

The Penfield Backprint Men’s Short Sleeve T-Shirt is simple but considerate. There’s a smaller company logo on the back and a bigger logo on the shirt’s back.

Sometimes simplicity is all you need. The shirt’s standard fit and clean logo exude carefree confidence; a little oxymoronic, but this shirt doesn’t care. As we said, it’s carefree, and it’s confident.

You can get your own for $48.

Penfield Women’s Clothing Review

Move over men, it’s time for the women to get their due time in the spotlight. All of the items in this Penfield Women’s review section are among the company’s hottest-selling items.

Penfield Elder Women’s Jacket Review

The Penfield Elder Women’s Jacket is better described as a poncho than a jacket, but that’s just our opinion.

It features a poncho shape, meaning it has larger sleeves, drapes long, and slightly widens as it runs down the body. There’s also a cute hood.

This jacket also has pockets on pockets! Though it only touts four, the pockets are deep enough to carry both a lifetime of existential ponderings and an extra bag of trail mix.

Both the prairie and pine colorway are eye-catching, but our Penfield review team has a weakness for the latter. Its dark green wonderfully contrasts with the jacket’s white drawcords.

One last thing we love about the Penfield Elder Women’s Jacket is that it’s made from 55% cotton and 44% recycled polyester. Normally, it costs $205, but it’s currently available for half that price, $102.

Penfield Ravenna Women’s Shorts Review

These shorts might have our favorite color options of any Penfield product thus far. The Penfield Ravenna Women’s Shorts come in either prairie or moss.

The former looks like you’re going to carve out a path through Arrakis, while the latter would fit Luke Skywalker’s training on Dagobah’s swamps and marshes.

The shorts are made of 100% cotton and feature a built-in belt alongside generously-sized pockets that give the item a tactical aesthetic.

Strap yourself up for any adventure for $89.

Penfield Hudson Script Women’s Long Sleeve T-Shirt Review

The Penfield Hudson Script Women’s Long Sleeve T-Shirt comes in biscuit, marshmallow, pansy, or black. We’re guessing they couldn’t think of a cute nomenclature for the last one.

That gives you a few minimalist options, or you can go for a more expressive pick with the louder biscuit and pansy colorways.

This is a loose-fit long sleeve t-shirt, which, in this Penfield review team’s opinion, is the best fit for a long sleeve t-shirt. There’s even a small logo on the item’s chest.

Make this 100% cotton shirt yours for $48.

Who is Penfield For?

Penfield Review

Now that outerwear has infiltrated the streetwear scene thanks to Patagonia and other companies, you may as well return to the style’s innovators. That’s why Penfield is for those who spend plenty of time outside and for those who spend an equal amount of time trying to look their best.

Since the brand’s products are still made with outdoor performance in mind, you won’t be exchanging fashion for function with Penfield.

Penfield Reviews: What Do Customers Think?

Penfield Review

We know that you trust our Penfield review, and we appreciate that. We do recognize that it’s best to consult with real-life customers to learn the juiciest information before you make a purchase. That’s why we’ve cobbled together an informative batch of consumer reviews and impressions.

We’ll begin by seeing what customers had to say about Penfield on the company’s Facebook page. One happy client was enamored by the brand’s customer service: “Penfield Rule! Carolyn in your customer services just found me a replacement hat after losing my favourite one on an almighty bender over new Year. It was sold out everywhere. Thanks a million.

Another ecstatic customer had nothing but love for Penfield. They said, “Great jacket, great quality, and super fast shipping; thanks Penfield, will be keeping this for years!

We can’t limit ourselves to just Facebook feedback, so we’ve also pulled from other sources like TrustPilot. There, Penfield has a 3.5/5 star average from the 14 customer reviews found on the site. Not too shabby.

One 5/5 star review hit the nail on the head with the company’s versatile appeal: “Very pleased with my new Penfield addictions to my wardrobe looking forward to wearing them out and about in the wilderness !! Or in town? Great quality materials and well made.

Here’s a reviewer with awareness; they suffered shipping-related issues but recognized Penfield wasn’t to blame. In fact, they commended the brand for how well they handled the situation:

Had loads of problems with delivery which was DPD’s fault not Penfield’s. When I told them what had happened they were very helpful. When I did get the items, I had to return items for larger size. Again hassle free and they even used a different courier to avoid the same issues I had with DPD. The shirts are great quality and I will shop again.

Finally, we looked through customer feedback on Penfield’s ShopBop page and were delighted by what we found. This 5/5 star review highly praised the Penfield Orana Jacket for its size and insulation.

They wrote, “ My brother owns a Penfield coat and has been singing its praises for a while. I can see why. Beautifully made, warm, fits very well and is super comfortable. Perfect for super cold days.

As we’ve touched on before in this Penfield review, the company makes clothing for all seasons. This celebratory insight into the Penfield Vassan Parka illustrates that the brand is just as adept at making clothes for spring as they are at keeping you warm and cozy in the winter.

Here’s what the review in question had to say, “The two large pockets on each side are quite deep, which add extra security for items. The jacket is lightly lined to provide warmth. Semi-water resistant, perfect for spring rain.

While we’re still on ShopBop we may as well conclude with this customer’s feelings towards how well their Penfield Lexington Jacket handled the harsh winters of the American midwest:

I purchased this jacket for the cold winters in Ohio (-10 F to +30 F temperatures). The jacket is very warm and super stylish! It took a few weeks for the wrist guards to loosen up. The jacket [fit] true to size: I am 5’2″ and 120 lbs and the Small fit perfectly.

So, unless they’ve got a heart made of ice, or enjoy the feeling of brutal winter winds taking a toll on their skin, it seems like customers are all in on Penfield. They report good designs, strong performance in inclement weather, and a great sense of style.

Is Penfield Worth It?

Penfield Review

This Penfield review believes that because of the company’s timeless look, reliable customer feedback, and functionality in both colder climates and warmer weathers, they are definitely worth looking into.

Not only is the apparel functional and well constructed, but it brings a pop of personality to your overall vibe. It can help you blend in while you’re adventuring in the wilderness, while still making you feel cool and collected at all times.
