About Kin Insurance

Kin Insurance Review

Don’t you think you deserve to protect your home and belongings regardless of where you live? Many insurance companies don’t think so, but then again, there aren’t many insurance companies like Kin Insurance.

The company embraces technology with open arms, working directly with consumers to help those in areas that are particularly prone to environmental instability. With over 65k Instagram followers, they are quite the hit.

Appearances can be deceiving though so allow me to shed some light on them in my Kin Insurance review. Keep reading to find out about the company’s policies, fees, discounts they offer, and what customers have to say about them.

Kin Insurance Review

Kin Insurance is a direct-to-consumer home insurance agency that primarily covers areas most affected by climate change. They’re popular within the Florida and California markets, though they also cover a few other states.

The Chicago-based company isn’t afraid of areas prone to natural disasters. They know that plenty of people live there, so they adapted their format to suit the needs of those customers. They don’t want to see anyone go without protection.

Thankfully, they don’t use this as a marketing scheme to upcharge customers. Kin Insurance strives to make insurance affordable and sensible, which is why so many of its new customers save upwards of $780 after switching.

Additionally, they offer a ton of benefits to those who go the extra mile to fortify their living arrangement. Let’s not stall my Kin Insurance review any longer. Here come the highlights!

Highlights

  • Provides replacement cost property insurance
  • Average savings of $780 for new clients
  • Customizable coverage
  • Free quotes available
  • Better Business Bureau-accredited
  • Multiple discounts available

Kin Insurance offers regular types of home coverage along with some extra coverage in certain circumstances. I’ll run through them all in the next portion of my Kin Insurance review.

Why You Should Trust Us

Our mission is to help you make better, more informed purchase decisions. Our team spends hours researching, consulting with medical experts, gathering insight from expert professionals, reviewing customer feedback, and analyzing products to provide you with the information you need.

Kin Insurance Features Review

Kin Insurance Review

These are the basic coverages Kin Insurance offers:

  1. Dwelling
  2. Other Structures (ex: sheds, garages, and fences)
  3. Personal Property
  4. Loss of Use
  5. Personal Liability
  6. Medical Payments

Nomads may also appreciate Kin Insurance because they can provide coverage for mobile homes as well as condos as rental properties.

Included in every basic coverage are ordinance coverage laws (meaning that they will cover expenses related to rebuilding your home per up-to-date building codes) and their managed repair program.

This program works like this: Kin Insurance will connect you with a contractor in your area who is licensed and has been approved through prior background checks.

Florida residents reading this Kin Insurance review will be happy to learn the company also provides special insurance just for them: flood insurance. The Sunshine State faces regular floods due to its proximity to the coast. Luckily, Kin Insurance covers them.

In fact, their flood insurance is quite different from the National Flood Insurance Program. Insurance offered through the latter only takes place 30 days after purchase, but Kin Insurance is active as soon as the purchase completes.

How Does Kin Insurance Work?

Kin Insurance Review

This portion of my Kin Insurance review will give you a glance at how the company generates a quote.

They ask you for a reasonably large amount of information including your address, property records, and other aspects of your life to generate a quote. Additionally, they’ll also look at real estate listings in your area and satellite images to find your rate.

One notable aspect of Kin Insurance is that they only offer replacement cost insurance, which differs from other insurance companies. Actual cash value is the norm from insurance companies, which can be a pain in the butt because it’s quite literal in how it pays you back.

For instance, if you own a 40-year-old desk damaged in a flood, the actual cash value would only reimburse you enough to buy another 40-year-old desk. That’s what we in the industry call a bummer.

Kin Insurance doesn’t work like that. They’re built differently. They implement replacement cost insurance, meaning that they’ll cover the cost for you to buy a brand-new desk.

Kin Insurance Fees

Kin Insurance charges certain fees depending on your place of residence. These include:

  • $2 flat fee for Florida residents for the Emergency Management, Preparedness, and Assistance Trust Fund.
  • 0.7-2% fee for the Florida Insurance Guaranty Association fee.
  • $3-7 for paying in installments, home inspection fees, and a surplus contribution fee.

Kin Insurance Rates and Discounts

Kin Insurance Review

Everybody wants to save as much money as possible, which is why you’ll want to pay close attention to this section of my Kin Insurance review. I’ll go through ways to keep some extra cash in your pockets when signing up for their coverages. Here are some examples:

  • Install home security devices or fire alarms.
  • Improve your home’s fire resiliency.
  • Install water leak detectors.
  • Earn accreditation from a builder.
  • Make your home energy-efficient in line with California’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Green Building Rating System.

There is also a bevy of discounts that come from your policy, including:

  • Use paperless policy management.
  • Be a new homeowner.
  • Go claim-free for three years.
  • Be a new homeowner.
  • Senior discounts for those over 50 years of age.

It’s worth noting that not all of these discounts are available in every state. For instance, the new homeowner discount only applies to Louisiana residents.

Who Is Kin Insurance For?

Kin Insurance Review

Sadly, Kin Insurance is only for customers in four states:

  1. California
  2. Florida
  3. South Carolina
  4. Louisiana

While they only operate in these locations, they plan to expand in the future. But I don’t know if they’re worth waiting around for when there are other reputable home insurance companies already active in your state, especially if you live in lower populated states like Iowa.

Kin Insurance Reviews: What Do Customers Think?

Kin Insurance Review

While looking for Kin Insurance reviews from real users, I was delighted to read that the brand averaged high scores across the board. This included particularly tough-to-please crowds on Trustpilot and Better Business Bureau. Here are the aggregate scores I found the most telling:

  • Trustpilot: 4.7/5 stars from over 2.9k reviews
  • Better Business Bureau: 4.7/5 stars after 1k reviews
  • Google Reviews: 4.3/5 stars from over 1.2k reviews

The majority of Kin Insurance reviews said that the company was easy to work with and had speedy response times.

“I had to switch to a new homeowner’s insurance company right after closing on my home in Florida. Kin Insurance was quick to respond, provided an easy process to get the contract signed, and provided a lot of discounts. I wish I had gone with them sooner, but so glad I am with them now,” wrote one customer.

Other clients said Kin’s quotes were less expensive than other insurance companies: “My insurance doubled in the last two years in Florida just because it’s in Florida, at least 50 miles from a coast. I received a postcard from Kin and simply had a good feeling about it so I got a quote, and it was HALF what my renewal was going to be.”

In general, Kin Insurance users were satisfied with the coverage they signed up for.

“We received a letter that our current carrier was going bankrupt. I immediately contacted a few brokers to shop for a new policy. A friend mentioned checking out Kin.com. I was able to get an online quote in minutes with great coverage.”

They went on: “I had to call the next morning to have an underwriter help me make a couple of edits/changes and then purchased my policy that same day. So easy. Excellent customer service and the whole process was effortless from start to finish.”

Safe to say a lot of customers had a great experience using Kin Insurance.

Is Kin Insurance Worth It?

Kin Insurance Review

Folks who don’t live in one of the four states that Kin Insurance covers or who prefer bundling their insurance policies together probably won’t find much to do with the brand.

However, those are about the only folks who I don’t think would deem the company worthwhile. For the most part, their generous policies and emergency coverage make them a great option.

Kin Insurance Promotions & Discounts

I covered the specific discounts the company offers earlier in this Kin Insurance review. Besides those, they don’t currently have any promotions available to bring new customers in.
