Overview of Neighbor
Operating as a solution to self-storage hosting and renting, Neighbor was founded in 2017 and is based in Lehi, Utah. It was co-founded by Colton Gardner, Joseph Woodbury, and Preston Alder, who sought a way to create a more accessible and personal way to store their items.
Today, the startup is used by both hosts and renters all over, with options for all different types of self storage. Neighbor handles all the tough stuff, like payments and connecting users, while both hosts and renters are able to seamlessly find what they need.
Hosts are able to choose their own rates, with recommendations by the company, and easily earn a passive income. Renters are able to filter based on exactly what they’re looking for and where in order to find the best storage for their needs.
Now that we know a little more about the brand and how it works, my Neighbor storage review will delve into some of the key highlights to consider.
- Wide variety of different storage types and solutions
- Options for vehicles, long and short term storage, boat storage, warehouse storage, self storage, and more
- Makes finding storage easy
- Ideal for selling the storage you have but don’t need
- Convenient storage locator
- Safe and secure; both for storage and payments
- Hassle-free communication between host and renter
- Passive income for hosts
Neighbor is ideal for both renters and hosts, essentially working as a hassle free way to connect storage spaces with those who need them. Neighbor operates as both an app and a website, allowing users to seamlessly communicate and search for rental spaces.
Up next, my Neighbor storage review will delve into all the details, sharing deets on the app and website, how they work, what you need to do to get started, and more, to help you decide if it’s the right platform for you.
Neighbor App Review
The Neighbor storage app is designed to make the renting, hosting, and storing experience simple and seamless. It’s a great way to both source affordably priced self-storage, or manage your rental spaces.
First of all, the app allows users to post and search for rental spaces, filtering by description, size, price, and more.
Then, renters are able to inquire about potential spaces, while hosts are able to determine who they’d like to rent to. No renters can access the space until the host has given the go ahead. Renters can also make reservations and hosts can easily accept them.
The app also allows for a hassle free payment process, charging renters as soon as they are accepted, and processing the amount for the host.
How Does Neighbor Storage Work?
As I mentioned in this Neighbor storage review, the company allows renters to find storage spaces and hosts to rent out their unused space. In other words, it’s a win-win for everyone involved.
It allows renters to search for spaces that are nearby, in their price range, and the right size. On the flip side, hosts are able to choose who they rent to and how much they’ll charge.
Both parties are able to easily communicate with each other and experience a secure and automatic payment process. Plus, the company requires verification from both renters and hosts to ensure that everyone feels comfortable and safe.
What Are The Requirements to List For Neighbor?
To become a host, users must sign up to become a member. After that, the process is really what you would expect.
If you have an unused space, whether it’s a closet in your home, a garage space, or an entire parking lot, and you are either legally responsible for or have been given permission to rent out the space, you can rent with Neighbor.
All rental spaces must have a valid physical address, and the posting must include the location, capacity, size, features, availability, and pricing.
How To Get Started With Neighbor?
If you’re interested in the hassle free renting and hosting experience that Neighbor offers, you’ll be happy to hear that it’s just as easy to sign up. That being said, the process is different for a host and renter–check out the details down below.

How To Earn Money From Neighbor?
Wondering how you can earn extra passive income when you’ve got an unused space, whether it’s a basement, carport, storage unit, or parking lot?
Neighbor makes it simple to rent out an abundance of different storage spaces and allows renters to easily find you by searching for exactly what they need. It’s also an ideal way to earn passive income, since your storage space may otherwise be sitting there unused.
On top of that, Neighbor does all the work when it comes to collecting payments from your renter. Each month, Neighbor automatically charges their credit card on the renewal date, which is the same date each month as their start date.
Also, Neighbor does not store your banking information. Instead, it uses Stripe, a payment gateway, which has encrypted and PCI-compliant servers, making it safe and secure.
With all that being said, I’ll delve a little deeper into the Neighbor storage host’s experience soon!
Are There Fees For Neighbor Storage?
To put it simply, yes, there are fees when using Neighbor for storage. All hosts will charge different rental fees, though Neighbor states that they are around 50% cheaper than traditional storage options.
Also, Neighbor charges renters a service fee around 10-15%, while hosts are subject to a 4.9% + 30 cents processing fee which provides automated billing, Payout Protection and the $1M Host Guarantee.
Neighbor Host’s Experience
With Neighbor, users are able to turn the space they’re not using into cash by becoming a host. I’ve already explained the process, but there are a few things worth mentioning about the experience.
Being a host with Neighbor is a great way to earn passive income. Essentially, users rent out spaces they aren’t using and thus earn extra money every month. If you already own the space, you won’t have to make any extra payments (apart from the inexpensive fees), or constantly attend to the space or your renter.
The only requirements are to list your space with a quick description about the location and size, remain in contact with your renter, and ensure that the space is safe and secure. Otherwise, Neighbor handles everything.
Whether you use the app or the website, the platform finds renters once you upload the details, handles transactions, and finalizes the arrangement. Then, you’ll only need to give the renter access to the space!
Neighbor Renter’s Experience
With such an easy experience for the host, it only makes sense for Neighbor to offer a hassle free renting experience for renters. Essentially, users are able to easily find storage with more control over the location since they’ll be able to filter through the options.
Plus, there are different rental period options if you only need storage during the winter months or are looking for something more long term. Listings will display the type, size, price, and location, so you can easily source what you’re looking for.
There’s also no extra paperwork, saving you time, while you’ll also be able to easily communicate with the host by texting or messaging them through the app.
Once you’ve found the right space, your debit or credit card will be automatically charged and the host will be notified. Then, you’ll be able to arrange a meeting with the host to gain access to the space.
Who Is Neighbor For?
Neighbor storage is designed to help both renters and hosts find convenient solutions. For renters, it’s finding a space to store their belongings, big and small, at an affordable rate.
For hosts, it’s a great way to earn extra (passive) income by renting out an unused area in your home, workplace, or land. And whether you’re a renter or a host, the company ensures that all storage and payments are completely safe and hassle free.
It also offers a variety of long term and short term storage, as well as small and large storage spaces, to suit everyone’s needs.
Neighbor Reviews: What Do Customers Think?
This Neighbor storage review wouldn’t be complete without some customer testimonials. So, I sourced ratings from Trustpilot, Facebook, and This Online World to paint an accurate picture of the company and how it works.
On Trustpilot, the service earns 3.6/5 stars out of 236 reviews. One renter shares that the app is convenient and user friendly:
“I am happy with the storage area and arrangement I found through Neighbor. I am parking my Class A motorhome at the Tanger Outlets in a designated parking area. It is so much better than having RVs of all types stacked in a traditional storage area! Easy access, close to my home, and 24/7 security checks.”
48 reviewers on Facebook award the company 3.5/5 stars. One host shares that their experience has been hassle free:
“I have used [Neighbor] for several months now to rent out my storage units and could not be more pleased with the platform and customer service. The process is pretty hands-off as a host and I am amazed at how quick I am able to market and rent my units.”
Neighbor is also highly rated on This Online World, with an overall score of 4.2/5 stars. The reviewer describes that it’s a great way for users to earn some extra cash:
“If you have extra storage space and want an easy way to earn passive income, becoming a Neighbor host is for you… This is a secure, simple way to make money with your extra space, and the $1 million in liability coverage is comforting.”
Overall, Neighbor lives up to its mission, connecting renters and hosts with exactly what they are looking for, allowing people to find affordable storage solutions near them, while simultaneously helping others earn a passive income.
A couple shoppers note difficulties reaching the customer service, but this issue appears to have been solved as noted in more recent reviews.
Neighbor vs. Airbnb
When it comes to storage solutions, there are plenty of options on the market. But Neighbor offers a more convenient option, with nearby locations, a variety of sizes, and an affordable price range. But how does it stand out compared to the competition? Let’s find out with Airbnb.
- Founded in 2017
- Known for safe and secure storage solutions
- Designed for both hosts and renters
- Range of storage spaces, from parking spaces to closets and garages for rent
- Rates range depending on the host, though Neighbor claims that prices are less than 50% of the competition
- Focuses on safety of all parties, as well as convenience
- Hassle free payments
- Founded in 2008
- Known for being a more affordable and convenient option for housing and vacationing
- Designed for both hosts and renters
- Different apartments, homes, lofts, and more available for rent
- Rates range depending on the host/location
- Focuses on safety of all parties, as well as convenience
- Hassle free payments
Both self storage options focus on connecting people who want to rent their unutilized spaces with people looking for extra spaces to keep their stuff, while making the entire process easy for both renters and hosts.
That being said, there are simply more options for specific storage needs with Neighbor, with options for utilizing sheds, closets, and basements, as well as parking areas and garages, while Airbnb focuses on living spaces.

At the time of this Neighbor storage review, I found that the company has a few rules set in place to ensure the renter is protected:
