About Theragun

Theragun Review

Theragun, now known as Therabody, is a tech wellness company that develops products and services for muscle recovery using cutting edge technology.

Muscle recovery is crucial for improving performance, letting our body heal itself before the next intensive training load. In this study[1], recovery time varies from person to person and relies on fitness pros to determine the best routine.

Theragun technology features percussive therapy, using amplitude, frequency, and torque to reach deeper into muscle tissue compared to a regular massage. It does this comfortably by “overriding the pain signals sent to the brain.[2]

Percussive therapy deals with soft tissue pain delivered in the form of strong pulses and vibrations directly onto the muscle. In this study[3], it was used on athletes to improve their range of motion thanks to an increase in flexibility.

Theragun was featured in Forbes, GQ, Health, Vogue, and on ESPN. Theragun has also been nominated for various Editor’s Picks and Fitness Awards for Health & Fitness Publications like Men’s Health and Golf Digest. Theragun also won the 2019 A’Design Awards for best design.

In this Theragun review, we’ll take a close look at the different products the company has to offer, customer experiences with the products, the ordering process, and more, to help you decide if their tech is worth the buy.

Overview of Theragun

Theragun Review

In 2007, Theragun Founder Dr. Jason sustained an injury in a motorcycle accident. He needed a product that could help alleviate pain while speeding his recovery. With a lack of options on the market, he decided to take matters into his own hands and created Theragun, working with scientists to develop an innovative and powerful solution.

Theragun Technology

Theragun Review

Theragun uses a blend of technology to deliver fast, effective recovery. Each Theragun is scientifically calibrated for optimal results and features a powerful industrial-grade Japanese motor to deliver 16mm amplitude. The frequency operates at 40 percussions per second, meaning it operates faster than it takes your brain to feel any pain.

“Scientific calibration” means adjusted to pinpoint accuracy according to a traceable reference or standard. This study[4] alludes that calibration research is still a work in progress but that the work currently being done is already unlocking new levels of precision to this day.

The Theragun G3PRO, the new and improved Theragun G2PRO, has a motor with torque up to 60lbs of force. It’s ideal for professionals and those who need extra-deep treatment for their muscles. This combination is scientifically proven to provide:

Torque is basically spinning, twisting, rotating linear force, meaning this motor can deliver 60 lbs of force on one area at a time. The G3PRO promises this several scientifically proven[5] benefits, including:

  • Pain relief[6]: vibration therapy effectively reduces early pain in clinical settings.
  • Enhanced performance[7]: regular exercise causes a whole host of responses in our body, helping our skeletal muscles adapt and improve our performance.
  • Accelerated recovery: while more research is needed on exactly how percussive therapy works with our body, this study[8] shows that it’s an effective method to improve muscle tissue health after overload.
  • Decreased pain[9]: it’s been proven that a brief massage over a specific location resulted in reductions in pain and fatigue in athletes.

Theragun Liv Review

Theragun Liv proves that power can still come at a lighter weight. Liv is great when you need to increase blood flow to support the body’s natural recovery process.

An increase in blood flow is a part of active recovery, which means gentle exercise and percussive therapy can speed up the process of healing when done in intervals.

This study[11] explores how blood flow to contracting muscles links oxygen in the air to the oxygen we consume. The basic idea[11] is that the increased blood flow actively replaces the accumulation of metabolites, leading to stiffness and pain.

Great for travel and everyday use, this item helps combat muscles’ general wear and tear. This Theragun features:

  • 2 Easy-to-Clean Closed-Cell Foam Attachments
  • A Protective Travel Pouch

The Liv comes with a Dampener and Standard Ball. Coming soon to the Theragun website, this device costs $249. You can also opt for payments as low as $21/month with 0% APR for an easier buying experience.

Theragun Elite Review

Theragun Elite is quiet but powerful. It’s quieter than the average electric toothbrush and has Active Torque Control for power that lasts. With 40lbs of no-stall force, the Theragun Elite works deep into muscles to relieve tension and release soreness. A responsive force meter lets you see your current speed, so you know what pressure works for you.

Stall force is the exact amount of force applied to a massage gun against the body before the internal motor stalls, which does not happen with this product until it exceeds 40lbs. According to this study, it’s important to know the optimal values these products can work at so we know the ideal output.

Other features include:

  • 120-Minute Total Battery Life
  • Smart App Integration with Bluetooth

Theragun Reviews: What Do Customers Think?

Theragun Review

This section of the Theragun review will guide your answers to the questions: is Theragun worth the money? Does Theragun really work?

Theragun reviews on TrustPilot are mostly positive, with a 4.1/5 rating. 73% of reviewers ranked their service as excellent, but a noteworthy 19% rated it as not-so-excellent.

Problems with refunds, returns, customer service, the price, and faulty devices are common among these Theragun reviews. On the other hand, a TrustPilot customer who uses Theragun devices in his clinic loves the device and the battery life, rating both 5/5 stars. But this same reviewer rates the attachments and customer service at 1 and 2 stars

Influenster includes a total of 18 4 to 5-star reviews about the product’s effectiveness and ability to relieve pain. One 5-star Theragun review stated “no more headaches for days from a knot in our shoulders! I have had it for a week and I feel more relaxed than I have in five years.”

Plenty of reviews on Amazon highly recommend Theragun devices, one writing that “this is “the only [device] that can work the knots out.” Here’s a summary of how Theragun products perform on Amazon:

  • Theragun Mini: 4.8/5 stars out of 3.8k ratings
  • Theragun Elite: 4.7/5 stars out of 3k ratings
  • Theragun Pro: 4.5/5 stars out of 811 ratings

Is Theragun Worth It?

Theragun Review

Percussive therapy is a scientifically proven method of muscle recovery. There have been thousands of customers who for this product is life-changing. There are, however, quite a few online reviewers unhappy with Theragun

But, this Theragun review has found that problems customers have aren’t necessary about Theragun not working, more so about the refund process and customer service. Attachments seem to break easily, and several customers have had problems getting replacements for them – meaning they can’t use their Theragun

Theragun is costly, yes. But it’s an effective tool that provides a superior level of therapy. A tool like this should be costly, as it’s taken a ton of research, development, and expertise. The motor itself is impressive, and you’re paying more for how powerful it is.

But if you’re able to place an order with Theragun, get a device that suits all your needs, doesn’t break, alleviates pain, and improves your day, then it’s certainly worth buying. So what’s the verdict here? Worth the buy, yes. But be prepared for the chance of slow customer service

FAQ

What does Theragun do?

Theragun uses percussive therapy to reduce general tension, stress, and to help you to relax. It does this by increasing blood flow and decreasing tension deep in your muscle using speed and depth and overriding pain signals sent to the brain.

Does Theragun get rid of knots?

Theragun is great for getting rid of knots. If you have a knot in a specific location, Theragun recommends working around the knot with the dampener attachment, then following with the standard attachment for 3 seconds, but no longer

They also say not to do it too frequently, give the area a chance to relax for 24 hours before you use the device again.

Can Theragun cause damage to muscles?

If you have a damaged muscle, the power of Theragun may irritate your injury further. So they don’t recommend using it on muscle strains, as this can cause further damage.

How often should you use Theragun?

It depends on your desired result, Theragun recommends using the device for a minimum of 15 seconds and a maximum of 2 minutes per muscle group. If you’re treating your full body, it should not last more than 15 minutes. You can do this 2-3 times per day

How do you charge a Theragun?

Some devices have batteries that need to be removed and some require to be plugged in, for devices that have batteries, like the PRO, follow these steps:

  1. Remove the battery by pressing the circular release button above the battery slot and pull it out
  2. Plug the charging wire into the port on the back of the charging dock
  3. Insert the battery into the charging dock and press down until the light flashes
  4. Charging is complete when the light stops flashing

The Mini comes with a Theragun charger, follow these steps:

  1. Turn off your device, making sure your Theragun shuts off
  2. Plug the power adapter into the charging port of your Theragun device
  3. Charging is complete when the LED light on the power/speed button is solid green.

What is Theragun’s Shipping Policy?

Theragun ships worldwide and all shipping costs are calculated at checkout. Shipping costs are calculated depending on your location, the weight of your package, and the method of shipping you choose. Once Theragun’s warehouse gets your order, they’ll process it and ship it within 2-3 business days

What is Theragun’s Return Policy?

If you don’t love your Theragun you can return it within 30 days for your money back. This Theragun review needs to note that if you bought yours from a retail partner, you’ll need to process a return through that store.

For orders placed on Theragun.com, when they receive your email, a team member will give you a Return Authorization Form to complete and send back to them. The form must be included with your return. Theragun does not cover shipping costs for returns. They’ll give you all the details including a return address when you email for your return.

When Theragun receives your return at their warehouse, it will take about 2 days to issue you your refund. Keep in mind it will take another 5-7 days for you to see your refund back on your original form of payment.
