About Bevel

Bevel Shave Review

Bevel is a men’s health and grooming brand created to better serve the needs of people of colour. While the company grew to meet the needs of marginalized communities, Bevel’s ever-expanding customer base extends to men of all races.

Bevel specializes in shaving products and was among the winners of GQ’s 2016 Grooming Awards. The brand advertises their shaving line as primarily designed to work with coarse, curly hair without irritating the skin or leaving bumps. This Bevel Shave review does a deep dive into the brand, to help you decide if their products are worth the buy.

Overview of Bevel

Bevel Shave Review

Bevel began in 2013 when Tristan Walker started the brand under the umbrella of his new business, Walker & Company. At the time, Walker was frustrated with the lack of shaving options that suited his needs as a Black man. Bevel is his solution to the problem.

Walker set out to create a system that would shave coarse, curly hair without leaving the universally dreaded razor burn that had plagued him since his teens. He wanted to create a quality, stylish shaving system that could cater to this market. In addition to their shaving products, Bevel provides instructions on use and releases tutorial videos on how to create certain styles and shave most effectively to reduce irritation.

After initially offering only shaving systems in an online subscription-based model, Bevel is now sold in retail stores and has expanded their line of products to include body, hair, and skin products. Though Bevel’s collection is designed for men, according to customer reviews, many women enjoy their products as well. As its community has grown, Bevel gained a number of high profile admirers including the likes of Nas and Magic Johnson.

As an in-depth Bevel Shave review, this will travel back to the beginning, looking exclusively at Bevel’s line of shaving products.

Bevel Shave Process

Bevel Shave Review

After starting with the online subscription-based model, Bevel now offers a la carte purchases and will re-release their subscription package in late August 2020. For the time being, you can still set up recurring deliveries at a 5% discount. The Bevel Shave inventory is designed to cover all your shaving needs from start to finish. In order of use, the step-by-step process includes:

1. Bevel Priming Oil

2. Bevel Shave Brush

3. Bevel Shave Cream

4. Bevel Safety Razor or Bevel Trimmer

5. Bevel Restoring Balm

It’s time to give the meat of this Bevel shaving system review.

Bevel Priming Oil Review

To the great delight of the Bevel Shave review, every Bevel Shave product has a little two-word job description. The Bevel Priming Oil Prepares + Calms. This is the first step in the Bevel shaving process, since moisture is the mark of calm, prepared skin and hair.

Those prone to dry skin will be pleased to know that the Priming Oil keeps everything calm by going alcohol-free: the Priming Oil instead relies on castor oil to fight infection.

The first step in the Bevel shave process combines sunflower, olive, and lavender oils to moisturize and soothe the skin and hair while reducing itching and irritation. In the end, the face should be about as oiled as if it was spending the day tanning on the Jersey shores, and twice as relaxed.

At $14.95 for a 2 fl. oz. (60ml) bottle, it comes across as a luxurious opening act in a nice, clean bottle, because guys (and girls) deserve to treat themselves.

Bevel Shave Cream Review

While the Priming Oil Prepares + Calms, the Shave Cream Moisturizes + Protects. Regardless, the Bevel Shave Cream treats the skin and hair like a bather who spent too long on their towel: with a healthy dose of Aloe Vera. Bevel is quick to point out that, unlike water-based shaving creams, they use everyone’s favourite post-sunburn plant as their key ingredient.

Aloe Vera joins forces with Shea butter, comfrey extract, and white tea to once again lock in moisture and soothe the skin and hair but with the added benefit of a protective moisturizing layer that allows the razor to glide across the skin like a surfer on a wave.

Featuring the same clean look and selling for $14.95 for a 3.4 fl. oz. (100ml) bottle, the Bevel Shave Cream is another product that could come across as an indulgence, but if it solves persistent bumps and cuts, and maybe even sunburns, it’s hard to object.

Bevel Shave Brush Review

In a more literal move, the Shave Brush Lifts Hair + Exfoliates. The tag says it all. The bonus of the Shave Brush is that its bristles perform three functions lost in hand application. It whips up the Shave Cream to better moisturize the skin. The bristles gently exfoliate impurities from the skin, which basically means it slews away the dead skin. Lastly, it allows for a closer shave by raising the hair.

An added benefit is that Bevel provides detailed instructions on the product page for how to use the Shave Brush and how to take care of it so it performs at its best.

The Shave Brush sells for a more competitive $29.95, which, coupled with Bevel’s lack of specifying the material suggests that it is synthetic and not made of the badger fur that is common in premium shaving brushes. It does, however, have a sleek metal handle that this Bevel Shave review holds in high regard.

Bevel Safety Razor Review

We’re still in the literal phase of Bevel’s product tags. The Safety Razor simply Prevents Bumps + Irritation. It loses marks for only preventing two issues, but if we dig a little deeper, the Bevel razor does quite a bit under that umbrella of prevention.

The Safety Razor a single blade to avoid the tendency of multi-blade razors to pull out the hair beneath the skin, thereby tugging and nicking the skin and leaving bumps. The Bevel razor is also weighted to apply the proper amount of pressure to the skin, as long as you follow the helpful instructions available on the product page.

Like the Shave Brush, the razor features the sleek design of a matte silver metal handle and a shiny silver head in a clean, simplistic design that Bevel says is very easy to clean. The Safety Razor is again on the pricey side at $49.95 but Bevel does advertise that it does away with the lifetime cost of disposable razors.

Adding to the cost, Bevel recommends changing the blade frequently for the best results, even within a single shave in some cases (although this wouldn’t be very practical or cost-effective).

Bevel Trimmer Review

If a clean shaven look isn’t your thing, go with the Bevel Trimmer. This bad boy boasts up to 8 hours of consistent and cordless power. The trimmer is designed with a soft-touch grip and custom-faceted body, offering serious control and 360° non-slip handling.

The Bevel Trimmer includes a T-Blade attachment, which creates faster cuts—giving you more control for fading, trimming, and lining those hard-to-reach areas. You know those guys you see passing on the street who have the cleanest lines? That could be you.

The Bevel T-Blade is designed to repel the dirt, oil, and build up that can lead to irritation. Cleaning simply involves wiping the blade with a cloth, or using a brush on it for a deeper clean. Adjusting the blade just takes one thumb-turn of a dial. The Bevel Trimmer with blade goes for $199.95.

Bevel Restoring Balm Review

We’re at the second last step in the Bevel shave process. The Bevel Restoring Balm Soothes + Hydrates, so it’s another dual-action product. Once again, the Restoring Balm goes alcohol-free to avoid drying out the skin. Refreshment is the goal here— this is the ice cream on the boardwalk at the end of your shave.

The Restoring Balm employs tea tree oil, jojoba oil, oat kernel, and salicylic acid to guard against infection, solve clogged pores, inhibit irritation, and leave the skin coolly hydrated for the rest of the day.

Costing $14.95 on its own for a 3.4 fl. oz. (100ml) bottle, it is more affordable than other high-end aftershaves but still above what you would pay for a standard one. Ultimately, its effectiveness determines the value but, of course, it does come in the matching Bevel bottle.

Bevel Shave Kit Review

Unfortunately, there’s no snappy equation for this one unless you want to treat it as the sum of all the steps, and this Bevel Shave review definitely wants to. It’s branded as The Complete Shave System, which is accurate—this is as complete as it gets.

The Bevel Shave Kit contains every item in the catalogue with an additional twenty blades. Following Bevel’s advice, however, twenty blades might not last too long.

Overall, the Shave Kit costs $89.95, which represents a discount of $34.80 compared to buying each product individually. If you’re into the entire Bevel experience, this is certainly a good deal.

Bevel Shave Reviews: What Do Customers Think?

Bevel Shave Review

If we follow logic in this Bevel Shave review, if the brand is telling the truth and the products actually follow through with the claims, then they’re worth it. Looking at the customer feedback, it’s good news for those struggling with razor burns.

Any review site is pretty unanimous that Bevel Shave provides quality products that are especially helpful in curing bumps and cuts with numerous reviewers saying it answered long-standing shaving problems.

There are differences in how convinced people are, though. Some Bevel shaving kit reviews admit they never use the Priming Oil, while others swear by its effects. Some don’t bother with the Shave Brush, while others love the experience. Some lament the prices but admit they came back, having tried and failed to find a more effective alternative.

On the other hand, there were some some issues that came up among customer reviews:

  • Overwhelmingly negative Bevel Shave reviews almost always cited issues with deliveries missing items
  • There was a worrying number of reviews saying the Priming Oil spilled during the delivery process
  • There were a few complaints about the Shave Brush shedding its bristles too much but Bevel notes that this is common among all shaving brushes (so it’s possible this is merely a case of expectations going awry)
  • Some Bevel razor reviews mention difficulty changing the blade

Is Bevel Worth It?

Bevel Shave Review

Overall, this Bevel Shave review finds that Bevel’s worth is determined by the needs of the individual. If you struggle with bumps and razor burn and have the time and budget to dedicate to your shaving process, then Bevel seems to be a worthy investmentbut if you are just looking for a quick and easy shave, then the cost probably does not outweigh the benefit.

After shaving I have cronic shave rash and I am interested in the Bevel shave kit. Can you please advise if the bevel would address this horrible problem as after shaving I am red faced and then the next day look like a fish as the skin comes away.
