About CrunchLabs

CrunchLabs Review

When you’re a kid, learning and fun can be packaged together so easily. If you have a child with an interest in engineering, then you may want to look into CrunchLabs, a monthly subscription service that provides toys that children build themselves.

The company is less than a year old but has already racked up more than 22k followers on Instagram. This CrunchLabs review will give you an idea as to how they earned so many supporters in such a short time by telling you about their history, their products, how their service works, and more.

Overview of CrunchLabs

CrunchLabs Review

CrunchLabs comes from the mind of Mark Rober, an engineering YouTuber with over 23 million subscribers. The company is in-line with his video content which mostly appeals to children who are interested in science. As such, CrunchLabs is an extension of his content that frequently combines education, entertainment, and science.

He launched the company earlier in 2022 as a way to interpolate engineering into children-applicable toys. The monthly delivery system gives customers all the materials and instructions they need to create interactive toys.

I want to dedicate a paragraph of this CrunchLabs review to the company’s sustainable practices. Every portion of their boxes – from the boxes themselves to the toys – is designed to stay as far away from landfills as possible.

CrunchLabs knows that kids make mistakes and that sometimes, those mistakes can break things. That’s why they made their toys repairable and flexible. Additionally, they use more wood than plastic in their Build Boxes so that the toys are more biodegradable. Speaking of that, their packaging is completely compostable as it’s made from uncoated cardboard.

Let’s move onto the highlights section of this CrunchLabs so that you can get a quick view of what attracts most customers to the brand.

How Does CrunchLabs Work?

CrunchLabs Review

CrunchLabs follows a three-tenant philosophy with each piece being equally integral. They are:

  1. Build
  2. Play
  3. Learn

The first component is easy enough to understand. After receiving your CrunchLabs Build Box, you’ll assemble the toy alongside the instructions the company includes. CrunchLabs designs the toys to be a fun challenge for kids between the ages of 8 to 12.

They should require a bit of ingenuity on your kid’s part, but they’re not impossible by any means. The company works on each project for months to ensure that the toys are just challenging enough that kids have fun building them. Plus, CrunchLabs includes an instruction booklet and a video tutorial to walk children through the process.

The second stage is play, which is exactly what it sounds like. CrunchLabs’ toys are toys, after all, so they’re meant to be played with and enjoyed after children have put them together.

Finally, there’s the learning component. Subscribers will gain access to monthly exclusive videos from Rober in which he explains the engineering behind each of the toys. In these videos, he bridges the gap between playing and learning so that children can see the principles behind their toys.

How Often Does a CrunchLabs Build Box Show Up?

CrunchLabs Review

CrunchLabs delivers their Build Boxes once a month. If you only want to receive one box then you can buy individual shipments rather than subscribing. However, you won’t know which toy you’re receiving because CrunchLabs likes to keep it a surprise.

Who Is CrunchLabs For?

CrunchLabs Review

As you’ll read in the next section of this CrunchLabs review, even children outside of CrunchLabs’ advertised age bracket can enjoy these toys. I do think that they’re best suited for kids who already have an interest in engineering as the construction of the toys may be a harder sell for kids who don’t already have an interest in building.

CrunchLabs Reviews: What Do Customers Think?

CrunchLabs Review

Since the brand is so new, there weren’t many CrunchLabs reviews online that came from customers. The only place I could find an actual aggregate score was on the company’s website. There, more than 40 customers gave CrunchLabs a 5/5 stars score.

I was delighted to read that many CrunchLabs reviews were recounts of families connecting through the toys. Parents and children played together with the completed toys and bonded over similar interests.

“My son is at the very edge of being a little too old for the build boxes, but I started a subscription anyway. We put the first build together. It was a great way to spend time with him doing something educational and having fun with the build after. The family time and educational value we got is priceless and worth the $30 bucks,” wrote one buyer.

CrunchLabs reviews frequently mentioned the age of the children the box was intended for. I read testimonials that said children as young as 6 years old enjoyed them (albeit with some help from parents) as well as preteens. Here’s another buyer review that explains that point.

Excellent box. Our 3 boys ages 14, 12, and 10 already have subscriptions to something similar so I wasn’t sure about doing it especially because it seemed geared to a bit younger audience but I am so glad we gave it a try! It’s a big winner! Having the video with Mark teaching and sharing his knowledge with the kids in his usual fun and passionate way is THE BEST PART for sure! It adds a whole new level to the boxes.”

Mark Rober’s videos were also mentioned in CrunchLabs reviews as being instrumental to the product’s appeal. Customers said that the videos were entertaining and helped bond the box to Rober’s brand.

“My kids were completely excited about the CrunchLab boxes as soon as they saw the video. Not only did it teach them physics principles but they also worked together to build it. Not only that, but they were just as excited to play with it after they built it. Thanks, Mark, for creating such a great learning experience for budding engineers!” said one customer.

If there was one complaint I read in CrunchLabs reviews it came from Reddit users who said that they were waiting for weeks to receive their first box. I wasn’t too surprised to read this for a few reasons.

Firstly, CrunchLabs are less than a year old, so they’re still trying to get their footing. Secondly, Mark Rober has a massive YouTube audience, so it’s likely that he underestimated how many people would sign up for CrunchLabs upon launch. Criticizing a service for being too successful is a backhanded compliment. Either way, the critique is worth noting but it does nothing to damage CrunchLabs’ overall positive customer reception.

Is CrunchLabs Legit?

CrunchLabs Review

There weren’t any red flags that popped up while I was conducting research for this CrunchLabs review. So, I’m inclined to say that the company is legitimate.

Is CrunchLabs Worth It?

Any product that makes me think, “I wish that was around when I was a kid,” gets my highest recommendation, and CrunchLabs makes me wish that I was two decades younger than I am now.
