About Keeps

Keeps Hair Review

Androgenic alopecia is the most common type of hair loss that affects men. As my group of friends got older, I noticed more than one receding hairline. And although it’s a physiological change that happens when we age, I’ve witnessed that it comes with psychological implications too.

Studies[1] show that hair loss has a negative impact on men’s self-esteem, social interaction, and overall quality of life. Whether it’s covering up with hats or going fully bald, losing their hair has been a huge change for the men in my life and a chip in their ego. Fortunately, there are treatments that can prevent and even improve this chronic condition, like Keeps.

A subscription-based telehealth company, it provides affordable hair loss prevention and some of the best hair loss treatments for men.

To help guard or regrow that crowning glory on your head, all you have to do is fill out a questionnaire, upload a couple of photos, and, lo and behold, your treatment arrives at your door.

Accessibility, Affordability, and Simplicity are the main thrusts for Keeps, headquartered in New York, NY. How do they do it? By offering a short catalog of the only two FDA-approved medications for hair loss to exist. They buy the generic version of these medications directly from a domestic lab, which allows them to offer significantly cheaper treatments.

While searching for remedies for my friends, I’ve come to know hair loss treatments as either painful, inconvenient, or expensive. Some even come with a slew of nasty side effects. However, Keeps seems different to me.

The big question I want to know is, does Keeps hair loss work? In this Keeps hair review, I set out to find the truth. Here, I’ll give you a snapshot of how their products work, their ingredients, possible side effects, prices, customer reception, and more.

Let’s get to that “and more” first by talking about Keeps’ pros and cons.

Why You Should Trust Us

Our mission is to help you make better, more informed purchase decisions. Our team spends hours researching, consulting with medical experts, gathering insight from expert professionals, reviewing customer feedback, and analyzing products to provide you with the information you need.

Pros and Cons

Keeps Hair Review

Pros:

  1. Convenience: Keeps provides an online platform where you can consult with a doctor and get prescribed medications for hair loss without visiting a physical clinic.
  2. Treatment options: Keeps offers FDA-approved medications such as finasteride (Propecia) and minoxidil (Rogaine), which are commonly used for hair loss treatment. These medications have shown effectiveness in slowing down or stopping hair loss and promoting hair regrowth in some individuals.
  3. Customized plans: Keeps tailors its treatment plans based on individual needs and provides personalized recommendations. They consider factors like age, hair loss pattern, and medical history to create a customized regimen.
  4. Cost-effective: Keeps aims to provide affordable options for hair loss treatment. Their pricing structure may be more accessible compared to traditional in-person clinics or other alternatives.

Cons:

  1. Limited focus: Keeps primarily focuses on male pattern baldness and offers solutions for men only.
  2. Potential side effects: Medications like finasteride and minoxidil can have side effects. Finasteride may cause sexual side effects such as decreased libido or erectile dysfunction in some individuals. Minoxidil may cause scalp irritation or unwanted hair growth on other parts of the body.
  3. Variable effectiveness: Hair loss treatment outcomes can vary from person to person.
  4. Ongoing commitment: Treating hair loss often requires ongoing and consistent use of medications. If you stop using the prescribed treatments, any benefits achieved may be lost, and hair loss may resume.
  5. Lack of in-person care: Keeps’ online platform offers convenience, but it may not provide the same level of in-person care and monitoring as a traditional clinic.

Recent Studies About Hair Growth Serums

Before considering any treatment, including Keeps hair, you should familiarize yourself with the science surrounding them. Here are some recent studies about hair growth serums that overlap with products Keeps offers.

  • This 2020 study found that a combination treatment of finasteride and topical minoxidil has better therapeutic efficacy than and similar safety as monotherapy.
  • A 2022 review summarizes the current and emerging therapies to promote hair growth, with a focus on androgenetic alopecia (AGA), male pattern hair loss (MPHL), and female pattern hair loss (FPHL). The review outlines various treatments such as finasteride, minoxidil, topical prostaglandins, natural supplements, microneedling, low-level laser light, platelet-rich plasma, fractional lasers, cellular therapy, Wnt activators, and SFRP1 antagonism.
  • A 2018 study reported that a topical solution of 0.25% finasteride admixed with 3% minoxidil, applied once daily for 24 weeks, worked to treat androgenic alopecia in men.

Ingredients

Here are some key ingredients commonly found in Keeps hair products:

  1. Finasteride: Finasteride is an FDA-approved medication used to treat male pattern baldness. It is available in oral tablet form. Finasteride works by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, which converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is believed to be a primary factor in male pattern baldness.
  2. Minoxidil: Minoxidil is another FDA-approved medication used for hair loss treatment. It is available as a topical solution or foam. Minoxidil is a vasodilator, meaning it widens the blood vessels and increases blood flow to the hair follicles. This can promote hair growth and prevent further hair loss.
  3. Ketoconazole: Ketoconazole is an antifungal medication commonly used to treat scalp conditions like dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. It is also believed to have anti-androgenic properties, which means it may help reduce levels of DHT on the scalp. Some hair loss products include ketoconazole to potentially combat the effects of DHT on hair follicles.
  4. Biotin: Biotin, also known as vitamin B7, is a water-soluble vitamin that is essential for healthy hair, skin, and nails. It is commonly included in hair care products and supplements to support hair growth and strength.
  5. Saw palmetto extract: Saw palmetto is a plant extract that has been traditionally used to treat urinary and prostate issues. It is believed to have anti-androgenic effects and may inhibit the conversion of testosterone to DHT. Saw palmetto extract is sometimes included in hair loss products as a natural alternative to finasteride.
  6. Niacin: Niacin, also known as vitamin B3, is involved in various metabolic processes and can support healthy hair growth. It helps improve blood circulation, which is important for delivering nutrients to the hair follicles.
  7. Caffeine: Caffeine is known for its stimulating effects, and it has been suggested that it can promote hair growth by stimulating the hair follicles. It may also help prolong the growth phase of the hair cycle and prevent hair follicle shrinkage.

Side Effects

No product is without potential side effects, including those I’ll talk about in this Keeps hair review. You should know what you’re getting into before starting any treatment, which is why I’ve outlined some potential side effects below.

  • Finasteride: Possible sexual side effects include decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, or decreased ejaculate. These side effects are generally rare but can occur in a small percentage of users.
  • Minoxidil: Scalp irritation, including redness, itching, or dryness, especially in the initial stages of treatment. Additionally, some users experience unwanted hair growth on other parts of the body if the medication comes into contact with areas other than the scalp. These side effects are typically mild and temporary.
  • Ketoconazole (when used topically): Potential scalp irritation, including itching, redness, or dryness. These side effects are usually mild and temporary.

How Does Keeps Work?

While I discovered there’s no guaranteed way to grow hair back, hair loss is easier to prevent. This is where Keeps’ network of licensed doctors, pharmacists, and care consultants step in to help.

How does a Keeps consultation work? From what I understand, you’ll have to answer a few questions related to their hair loss and lifestyle, and provide details of your medical history, following which you’ll need to upload a couple of snapshots of your hairline and crown. A licensed physician from Keeps will review these documents and prescribe the best treatment plan.

Around six weeks after you start treatment, Keeps will reach out for updates. At this point, if you have any queries or concerns, you can connect with the company’s specialists.

Keeps Plans

Keeps Hair Review

So, what makes Keeps a ‘Big Wig’? I believe it’s all in its simple plans. I appreciate that the company doesn’t have banners that scream ‘Head full of hair in less than 3 months!’, or provide infinite options like laser treatment, hair transplant, magic oils, and other miracle cures. Keeps keeps things simple, and I like that.

In my research I discovered that there are two safe and effective formulas—Minoxidil and Finasteride—that are FDA-approved for preventing hair loss. Depending on your condition, Keeps’ specialists will draw up a personalized treatment plan that recommends either one or both of these treatments.

Keeps offers 3 main plans:

  1. Treatment for overall thinning hair (for which a combination of Finasteride and Minoxidil[2] are prescribed). In these cases, researchers found that the combination of both drugs is safe and more effective than monotherapy.
  2. Receding hairlines (treated with a daily prescription tablet of Finasteride, 1mg). Finasteride maintains and gradually regrows hair[3] in the top and anterior mid-scalp areas of the head.
  3. Thinning at the crown (treated with daily foam or solution of Minoxidil, 5%). When there are initial signs of alopecia, Minoxidil 5% is a safe and convenient solution with proven efficacy; more details on these later in this Keeps hair review

Keeps is reasonable. I value that they don’t promise you the sky, stars,… and hair. They promise to try, and they assure you they care, and from what I’ve read so far, I think they really do. Ahead in my Keeps hair review, I’ll showcase some of the brand’s essentials and what they help with.

5 Best-Selling Keeps Hair Products

Keeps Hair Review

Up next in this Keeps hair review, I’ll give you a look at the brand’s best-selling shampoo and conditioner alongside their other prescription products. Note that the shampoo and conditioner can be purchased either together as a part of your treatment plan or separately.

Keeps Conditioner Review

Keeps Hair Review

Made to be thickening, softening, and effective, the Thickening Conditioner for Men is made with saw palmetto, biotin, caffeine, and green tea.

I’ve heard of the stimulating effects of caffeine before, but discovered that all of these ingredients are actually approved by advisors and work together to strengthen strands for overall healthier-looking hair.

What personally caught my interest, was its DHT-blocking capabilities, its stimulation of the hair follicles to improve growth, and the added dose of antioxidants to remove toxins and protect against environmental stressors.

Does this hold up? Current evidence suggests that green tea, caffeine and saw palmetto do indeed have the ability to inhibit 5-alpha-reductase activity[4].

Users seem to see real-life results too. One happy Keeps customer commented: “I been using this products for over 5 months and I can see a huge difference. Best product ever. Try it and felt in love…

The Thickening Conditioner for Men comes in an 8 oz bottle and is completely paraben-free. Grab yours for $22.

Keeps Shampoo Review

Keeps Hair Review

To help your conditioner do the heavy lifting, the Thickening Shampoo for Men is made with all of the same ingredients as the conditioner for stronger, thicker growth over time with a DHT-blocking, paraben-free formula.

I’m a fan of a double-shot espresso, so maybe there’s truly something to double-dosing ingredients. Made in the same 8 oz bottle, the shampoo is meant to protect and clean your strands while helping hair look thicker and flourishing.

Yet another Keeps user made positive remarks about seeing thicker hair: “Works‼️‼️‼️ Can’t believe it,I’ve been getting thinner and thinner through the years and gave this a shot.My hair is noticeably thicker and lots of people have comented saying I’ve never seen you without a hat before.

I’ve got to note here that this shampoo and conditioner combo alone does not prevent or rectify hair loss, but it is meant to thicken existing hair.

The Thickening Shampoo for Men comes to a total of $22.

Keeps Finasteride & Minoxidil

Keeps Hair Review

When it comes to the health skin, hair, and nails, I’ve often heard that an inner and outer approach can be helpful. The Finasteride & Minoxidil Plan is recommended to reduce the overall loss of hair and help with hair regrowth.

The plan includes a combination of daily prescription tablets and topical treatment. You can choose Minoxidil either in solution form or pay an extra $5 to get it in foam.

Keeps offers a 3-month of supply of this combination at a discounted price of $70 for the first 3 months and its original price of $105 every 3 months after. I think it’s a great way to try out the combo and see if it works.

If you decide to keep going, your subscription will be automatically billed and shipped every 3 months. You can also cancel your subscription at any point if you want to.

Customers who are recommended the Finasteride & Minoxidil Plan will also receive a bottle of Ketoconazole[5], a prescription shampoo used to treat dandruff, itchiness, and flaking. What’s the point in regrowing your mane if it’s going to be all scraggly, brittle, and prickly, right?

Customers say: “Keeps has changed my life. It has given me back not only my hair, but also – and most important – it has given me back my confidence,” one subscriber said. “It is an incredible feeling.

Keeps Finasteride

Keeps Hair Review

Keeps’ Finasteride Plan includes the eponymous ingredient, Finasteride, that’s central to all hair loss treatments. Popularly referred to as “fin” in online forums, Finasteride is typically prescribed as a 1mg pill taken daily and I’ve read that it’s generally effective for receding hairlines.

Note: Finasteride is used to treat male pattern baldness only in men. It is not to be used by women, especially those who are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Doctors also warn those suffering from liver and kidney diseases and prostate cancer against taking Finasteride.

Keeps recommends taking the pill daily for at least 3 months before you notice a marked decrease in hair fall. You’re advised to continue taking it for up to a year, and I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but failing to do so could mean the effects are reversed—but that’s something I couldn’t independently fact-check for this Keeps hair review.

Now that I’ve given you all you need to know about Finasteride in this Keeps hair review, there’s just one thing left to decide: Is this the right treatment for you? If so, it costs $75 every 3 months ($50 for the first 3 months) for 90 tablets.

Price aside, I read numerous positive comments from Keeps customers about this treatment. Take, for example, this person’s:

“Started using Keeps about a year ago due to a receding hairline. It had completely stopped the loss and I have even seen some regrowth. Highly recommend!”

Keeps Minoxidil

Keeps Hair Review

Want a fuller head of hair? (I mean, who doesn’t?) The Minoxidil Plan could be for you. This daily topical solution or foam is for growing thicker, longer (and just more) hair on the crown and vertex.

To use, you’ll apply Minoxidil on your scalp twice a day. While I’ve read that there could be some initial shedding as the new sprouts push the older strands, most people who vouch for the treatment say they see results in 3-4 months.

Who should not take this medicine? Doctors advise women against taking extra-strength Minoxidil products, including the 5% topical solution. The medicine is not approved for use in children as well.

Although Keeps Mindoxyl is generally safe, like all medicines, it is associated with rare but serious side effects. They include:

  • Chest pain or palpitations
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Skin rash
  • Blisters or itching
  • Sudden weight gain and swelling of the hands or feet

Some of the more persistent, non-serious side effects include:

  • Headaches
  • Unusual hair growth on the face, arms, and back

This miracle potion, of sorts, costs $30 for three months supply ($20 for the first 3 months). Minoxidil in foam costs an additional $5.

Alternatives

Here are some brands with similar formats (i.e. online health companies that focus on men’s issues) to Keeps’.

  • For Hims: For Hims provides discrete aid for common male ailments like erectile dysfunction and hair loss.
  • Roman: An online health clinic with a wide array of items serving male issues like hair loss, weight gain, and sexual health.
  • Bosley: Bosley offers surgical and non-surgical treatments for men’s hair loss, including treatments that target receding hairlines.

Keeps Hair Loss Reviews: What Do Customers Think?

Keeps Hair Review

When I first landed on Keeps, it felt like striking follicular gold—and I’m not the only one to think so. In this part of my Keeps Hair review, I dug around for more and learned what customers really think about its products.

First, let’s check out some of Keeps’ average ratings on trusted review sites as of May 2023:

  • Best Company: 4.7/5 stars based on more than 45 reviews
  • Amazon: 4.1/5 stars based on more than 3,400 reviews on the Keeps Minoxidil for Men Topical Hair Loss Aerosol Foam
  • Trustpilot: 2/5 stars based on more than 20 reviews

When checking out keeps.com, I found that more than 6,000 customers awarded the brand 4.8/5 stars as of May 2023. Here’s what one had to say: “Keep’s works! Within 6 weeks of consistent use, I started to see regrowth on all parts of my scalp.

This kind of Keeps Hair review is common on the brand’s website, but since I’m a fan of variety, I decided to head off its home base and out into the wide web.

In my search, I saw that Keeps is BBB-certified. On the BBB’s website, the brand got an average rating of 2.02/5 stars as of May 2023. Customers who rated the company highly praised it for its simple process, and its unwavering commitment to hair loss prevention (when its competitors have expanded to include other health and lifestyle services). Here is an example of a positive Keeps hair loss review:

This is a fantastic company! So easy to get started with and continue on. I have seen fantastic results since I started with them, and feel very comfortable being able to maintain my routine with their prompt shipping.”

It seems that affordability is another one of Keeps’ key selling points. But even so, I read that a lot of customers say the generic and cheaper versions of these medications are available in popular stores. This is how a Keeps hair loss Reddit reviewer summarized this view:

I still get my fin from Keeps but you can get minoxidil much cheaper from Amazon. To be honest, you’re probably better off seeing a dermatologist and telling him/her that you’re losing your hair, you’re self-conscious about it and you’d like a prescription. It’ll be tons cheaper than Keeps. Besides, your insurance will cover you.”

I’ve got to mention at this point in my Keeps hair review, that the brand’s biggest pullback appears to be its customer service. Several customers have complained of hassles while trying to cancel their subscription and unresponsive customer service.

While researching, I came across a few customer complaints about subscription billing issues. With that said, the fact that the brand has an A+ score on the BBB tells me that it handles issues promptly.

All in all, Keeps appears to hold true to its promises and thousands of men have seen positive effects while using its formulas.

Is Keeps Hair Loss Worth It?

Keeps Hair Review

You shouldn’t have to go broke to avoid going bald. I’ve seen men go down that road, and it’s far from pleasant. This is where Keeps scores. Keeps is affordable. Keeps is reliable. Keeps is fair.

As I mentioned in the previous sections of this Keeps hair review, while its competing subscription services like Hims have ventured to other services like ED and general health, Keeps stays focused on hair loss treatments. The old business motto of doing one thing and doing it well comes to my mind here.

Furthermore, I got the feeling that making a profit is not the sole driver of this business. For Keeps, their main aim is to keep hair on your head and combat male pattern baldness

Since no Keeps review is complete if it’s not thorough, I though it’d be worth mentioning that they are the only online hair loss player to offer both foam and regular liquid Minoxidil. If you’re a fan of foam, this brand delivers.

My final verdict in this Keeps review? This one is a keeper
