About American Home Shield

American Home Shield Review

Things break. That’s just the circle of life. From faulty refrigerators to glitchy TVs, it’s common for the average household to experience some technical errors. As ordinary as they might be, the cost to get them repaired can build up. This is where American Home Shield comes in, an insurance company that covers appliances and systems when they stop working.

Highly rated on Consumer Affairs, American Home Shield has become a necessity for many Americans. They’ve also been featured by a few media outlets, including Business Wire, Digital Journal, and Bob Vila.

Not fond of a $200 repair job? If so, perhaps it’s time to consider adding an insurance plan. Keep reading, as in my American Home Shield review, I’ll give you an in-depth take on the brand, its services, customer ratings, promotions, and more to help you decide if they’re worth checking out.

Overview of American Home Shield

American Home Shield Review

You can say that AHS was founded on American goodwill. The story starts in 1971 on Long Island, New York, where a team of policemen and firemen banded together to provide handyman services for the locals.

Word about the company soon spread to California, specifically to the ears of one Sigmund Anderson. Inspired by the idea, he decided to improve on the ‘fixer-upper’ idea by implementing an insurance model.

A safety net for homeowners in case of glitches and damages, American Home Shield is committed to providing its clients with a sense of relief. According to their website: “Our goal is to empower homeowners to feel confident and in control of their home. We want to help you keep your home running smoothly, all the time.”

Before I continue on with my American Home Shield review, let’s go over some highlights.

Highlights

  • Home warranties for home appliances and systems
  • Covers kitchen appliances, electrical systems, heating and cooling, and more
  • Offers professional repairs
  • Affordable with several plans
  • Available in several states
  • Positive customer reviews

Dysfunctional home appliances usually lead to two options: purchasing brand-new replacements or hiring a repair man. Given that constantly replacing your appliances can be quite expensive, most of us try to fix our appliances.

But that can still be a costly deal, as repair fees and replacement parts can add up quickly. If you’re looking to cut yourself some slack, it’s time to consider American Home Shield.

Flexible in cost and add-ons, American Home Shield works with you, not against you. They offer a wide selection of plans to choose from. To keep things short and sweet, I’ll provide a brief rundown of their services in the next section of my American Home Shield review.

American Home Shield Warranty Review

Technology is rarely foolproof. It’s bound to glitch and slow down over time, so it’s best to be prepared when that happens. American Home Shield can offer some protection, as they provide warranties for systems and appliances. This includes electrical systems, plumbing, electronics, pools, and more.

American Home Shield Plans Review

American Home Shield Review

American Home Shield offers three plans. This includes ShieldSilver, ShieldGold, and ShieldPlatinum. All warranties differ in terms of what is covered.

For instance, ShieldSilver can help protect air conditioning units, electrical systems, and plumping. ShieldPlatinum, on the other hand, covers various appliances, such as laundry machines, refrigerators, and kitchen tools.

Designed to provide protection for up to a year, American Home Shield warranty plans also come with add-ons in case you require extra fixing. For example, let’s say you’ve signed up for ShieldSilver, but are looking to get insurance for roof repairs. AHS provides coverage for leaky construction, missing shingles, rot, and other types of damage.

If you’re wondering what’s qualified under American Home Shield, they offer insurance for old appliances, improper installations, products that don’t come with maintenance records, and more. I highly recommend reaching out to a sales representative if you have questions about their warranties.

American Home Shield Fees

AHS recognizes the need for affordable insurance, which is why their plans start at the low price of $40 per month. The final expense is dependent on the size of your house, your needs, and any additional coverage you require for your home. Trade service calls are also included in the plan, but clients are responsible for covering repair request fees.

According to the brand’s website, an average home covered by AHS costs around $480 per year. If you have questions regarding coverage for your house, in particular, you can request a free quote by visiting their website.

As you’ve probably noticed, American Home Shield isn’t completely free of negative feedback. I found a significant amount of complaints worth discussing before you sign up for an AHS warranty. I’ll cover some red flags in the next section of my American Home Shield review.
