When I was sent a complimentary Saladzilla from Kahuna Gear, I wasn’t sure what to think at first. Sure, it scrunched down easily to the size of my fist and weighed next to nothing, but would it really dry greens as effectively as the brand claimed? Upon opening the paper envelope the spinner arrived in, I soon had many more questions.

Kahuna Gear is a newly founded brand inspired by the great outdoors. Taking notes from the durability and practicality of camping and hiking gear such as tactical apparel, backpacks, and supplies, their aim with the Saladzilla was to create a super portable and eco-friendly product that made sense for everyone.

Kahuna Gear Saladzilla: First Impressions

When my Saladzilla arrived, I was pretty excited to see that it was tucked into a very slim pouch. The packaging was incredibly minimal, and the actual spinner fit inside a very thin brown paper envelope.

Needless to say, I was curious how a salad spinner with a 2-gallon capacity could be squeezed inside such a small package. 

Upon opening the envelope, I found the top and bottom part of the spinner, an instruction and information guide, and that’s it. No unnecessary plastic whatsoever. No filler, no fluff. The spinner itself even had wooden toggles.

Kahuna Gear Saladzilla: Performance

I tested my Saladzilla with red-leaf lettuce. This type of lettuce is particularly curly, and I chose it because I wanted to see how well the spinner would work with trickier varieties of greens. 

First thoughts? It was super easy to use. I loved how much I could fit in the spinner, and the entire process was very satisfying. Though it takes a few more steps than a traditional spinner (it took me 5 rounds of spinning to get my lettuce dry), spinning the bag by hand and seeing how much water collects off the lettuce was really cool.

When I was finished spinning, I had a bunch of clean, dry leaves that weren’t damaged in any way. 

Kahuna Gear Saladzilla: Capacity

I can fit so much more in the Saladzilla than any other salad spinner I’ve owned. With a 2-gallon capacity, you can make a big family-style salad for an event or a barbecue. For reference, traditional spinners successfully dry about 10 ounces. That’s not a lot. 

Kahuna Gear Saladzilla: Durability

The Saladzilla is lightweight but very durable. The handle is made with diamond ripstop fabric—the same material from which tactical gear is made. The body is made from a food-safe, stain-resistant, and quick-drying woven material, while the shell is made from quick-drying waterproof TPU. 

I was really impressed with the material of the Saladzilla and with the company’s approach in general. More durable than plastic, the fabric construction makes it completely foldable. Even though it has a metal ring, it’s flexible enough to fit in the little pouch attached to the top of the spinner. So smart.

Kahuna Gear Saladzilla: How To Use

I watched the how-to video of the Saladzilla before I used it, and while I encourage you to, it’s super easy to use. Just follow these steps:

1. The top and bottom of your Saladzilla will arrive separated. You’ll need to attach the toggles on the top to the loops on the bottom. There are a total of three. 
2. Soak your lettuce in a bowl.
3. Roll the top of your Saladzilla down to the metal rim and pop your wet lettuce in.
4. Pour out any water that collects at the bottom of the spinner.
5. Grab the top of the bag tightly and spin it around. This part was actually pretty fun. 
6. Repeat steps 4 & 5 as needed
7. Turn the bag upside down and push out your lettuce into a clean bowl.
8. Dress your salad as desired and dig in!

Saladzilla vs Traditional Salad Spinners

Browse the web for salad spinners and you’ll find large stainless steel or plastic bowls with handles or push functions. To use them, you’ll crank the handle or push the button until you’re pleased with the dryness level of your lettuce.

Easy to use, sure, easy enough to wash too…but when it comes to properly drying and storing them, you run the risk of mold and bacteria growth after shoving the closed container in your cupboard. 

Short on storage space? Good luck finding a spot to put your spinner in your kitchen. Because salad spinners need to be a certain size (who only spins a cupful of lettuce?), one of my main issues with traditional models is their size. Not many of us have ample space in our kitchens, so the Saladzilla’s design is something I really appreciate. 

As for the price, I’ll admit when I first saw the price tag on the Saladzilla, I was a bit surprised. But after using it and contemplating the alternatives, I get it. A cheap plastic salad spinner costs about $20. These break incredibly easily. I’ve cracked one before simply trying to find space for it in my cupboard.

The alternative? A stainless steel spinner that costs about $60-80. While this solves the durability issue, it doesn’t solve the space issue. Enter, Saladzilla.  In addition, a stainless steel spinner has a steel basket but its top cover is still plastic and still has risk of mold and bacteria growth.  Also the spinning mechanical parts could break.

The Kahuna Gear Saladzilla solves a lot of problems, giving you incredible value for money. It folds up and stores in a pouch the size of your fist, meaning you can toss it in a drawer, hang it on a hook, or take it with you anywhere. 

Who Is The Kahuna Gear Saladzilla For?

The Kahuna Gear Saladzilla is for anyone who’s tired of large, bulky salad spinners. Durable, convenient, and easy to store, whether you’re short on storage space, avoiding plastic, or simply want a more eco and life-friendly product, I think you’ll love the Saladzilla.

You know what I think about the Saladzilla, but what about others? I took to the web for this section of my Kahuna Gear Saladzilla review and found out.

The first source I’ll check out is Amazon where the spinner has a 4.4/5 star score among 32 global ratings. Here’s the snapshot first:

• 5 stars: 50%
• 4 stars: 37%
• 3 stars: 13%
• 2 stars: 0%
• 1 star: 0%

The fact that no one rated the Saladzilla below 3 stars speaks volumes. So what exactly did they like about it? This next Kahuna Gear Saladzilla review tells all:

“I love Saladzilla! It is super easy to use and dries my greens fast. Unlike the big plastic bowl spinners that are hard to turn, this spinner simply uses gravity as you twirl it in the air for less than 1 minute. It dries in about 5 minutes and then I store it in the drawer. Voila…a great item to have for everyday use or travel!”

Another Kahuna Gear Saladzilla review on Amazon read, “The top two reasons why everyone should have a Saladzilla is because of how much space it saves in your home and how sustainable this product is. I don’t see myself having to throw away this high quality and heavy duty material anytime soon. It is very durable and can withstand a beating. And it folds up so small that I can fit it in my utensil drawer!”

After using the spinner myself, I can honestly back up these comments. Not only does it dry green fast, but it’s easy to use and dries quickly when you’re done. I personally love how sustainable the product is and its smart, functional design. 

How about other sources? The Saladzilla is a relatively new product, so the only other review I dug up online comes from Ubut. It reads:

“The Saladzilla salad spinner is a product that is both space-saving and sustainable. It is made with heavy-duty material and can be folded up and stored in a utensil drawer…One customer who manages Type 2 diabetes found it to be ideal for road trips and outdoor activities. The Saladzilla spinner was easy to use and dried quickly, making it a convenient and hassle-free option. Another user praised the product for its bright colors and easy-to-use toggle closures.” 

Ok, so a few things in this Kahuna Gear Saladzilla review caught my attention. One, I also love the fact it can be stored in a utensil drawer, and two, it’s made with bright colors with easy-to-use toggles. Why is this last point so important? Because those with slight mobility issues or vision impaired can still use the spinner. 

Just like I found, those who bought and used the Saladzilla found it to have an excellent, user-friendly design. They appreciate its size and report that it dries greens effectively.

Is Kahuna Gear Legit?

Nothing I found during this Kahuna Gear Saladzilla review would make me think otherwise. I’m a fan of the brand’s mission, and their product is of excellent quality.

One of my favorite things about the Saladzilla is its size. I’ve always been a salad-loving girl, which means I make gigantic salads for myself and my family. Traditional salad spinners don’t have a great capacity. In fact, you can only use chopped leaves in them.

What if you need your whole leaves cleaned for lettuce wraps? Instead of washing them one by one, just use your Saladzilla. You can toss whole leaves and herbs in as well, give it a few spins, and you’re good to go.
