About SpotOn

SpotOn GPS Fence Review

It’s hard enough to leave your dog at home when you go out, but leaving them cooped up inside in fear of losing them is even worse. Yet, so many of us do it to keep them safe.

The alternatives? Physical fences that cost thousands and electric, or buried wire fencing that requires a lengthy installation process. The SpotOn GPS Fence is an easy and safe option for you and your dog, which uses GPS technology to create a virtual field that will send a notification whenever your dog leaves the area delimited by you, working as a fence with which you can keep your dog under control. It requires very little setup and is completely customizable to your property and preferences.

The folks behind SpotOn believe that your dog is happiest when they get to run free. They have swapped the wires and base stations with True Location™ GPS technology to provide dog owners with a super flexible and reliable way to keep their dog contained. In addition to fencing, this advanced tech and reliable GPS, you’ll be notified within seconds if your dog runs a little too free and passes the boundary.

As the inventor of GPS fences with the first GPS fence on the market, SpotOn has been recognized by several industry associations including a CES 2020 Innovation Award honoree, SXSW 2020 Innovation Award finalist, 2019 New Hampshire Tech Alliance Product of the Year, and more recently 2022 Massachusetts TLC Tech Top 50, and recognize by Fast Company as one of 2023’s Fastest Growing Companies.

The brand has also been featured by Forbes and Wired and aims to make “dog containment more flexible, reliable, and convenient.”

To find out if it’s the right fit for your dog and property, check out this SpotOn GPS Fence review. It’s packed with key details on the system, how it works, feedback, and more. I’ll get things started with the highlights.

SpotOn GPS Fence Review

SpotOn GPS Fence Review

If you’re looking for a simpler way to contain your dog, the SpotOn GPS Fence takes the hassle out of keeping them safe. Its reliable and accurate fencing system is controlled through an app on your smartphone, making it even easier to track your dog.

In the coming sections of this SpotOn GPS Fence review, we’ll take a closer look at the signal-based fence and how it works, along with the technology behind it, and of course, how much it costs.

SpotOn GPS Fence: What’s In The Box?

SpotOn GPS Fence Review

Who doesn’t love unboxing a new gadget? There are hundreds of YouTube channels dedicated to it, but I’ll do a word-based one here so you know exactly what will be in your SpotOn shipment. Here’s what’s inside your box:

  • 1 SpotOn GPS Collar
  • Charging base and wall charger
  • 2 sets of static contact points
  • Static contact point tester/insertion tool
  • User guide

SpotOn GPS Fence Technology

SpotOn GPS Fence Review

The SpotOn GPS Fence uses cutting edge technology to solve a problem that many pet parents face, a reliable way to contain your pet without fences and wire. It negates the need for physical installation of any kind and to set it up, all you need to do is walk around your yard or draw on a map. Seriously.

So what can you expect while using it? The most powerful GPS technology available. SpotOn uses location data from up to 30 satellites at once, which span 4 global satellite constellations which includes GPS, GLONASS, Galelio and Beidou.

For reference, this system is more accurate than any other pet technology as others can only tap into one satellite system at a time.

GPS signal accuracy is of the utmost importance for your dog’s safety, so let’s talk about noise negation. SpotOn GPS Fence uses the highest noise-resistant antenna available. It, combined with SpotOn’s patented technology filters out GPS signals affected by buildings, trees– establishing your dog’s True Location™, and producing the most reliable boundary for your dog.

One of my favorite parts about SpotOn is its user-friendly app. Setup is a breeze and it only takes 2 minutes to get the system up and running.  The app helps guide you through training your dog on their new fence boundary. With the optional cellular subscription, you can tune in to see your dog’s location. If they leave the fence, you’ll be notified and the system will automatically track their location every 6 seconds. SpotOn is the only smart dog collar that offers a choice of data plans – customers can select either AT&T and Verizon— so they can opt for the cellular service that works best for their area, regardless of the customer’s phone carrier. If they know they live in an area with poor cell service, they can opt out of the plans entirely. GPS fences will always work right out of the box with or without a subscription.

SpotOn GPS Fence Specs

SpotOn GPS Fence Review

The specifications aren’t the most interesting details, but they’re important when understanding a product in its entirety. In this part of my SpotOn GPS Fence review, I’ll walk you through selecting the right size and battery life.

It’s very important that you choose the right size collar for your dog. That’s why SpotOn offers three different sizes. Sizing is important to ensure the antenna sits on the back of your dog’s neck where it has the best view of the sky. Measure your pup’s neck and then see the list below:

  • Small: 10”-14”
  • Medium: 12”-18”
  • Large: 17”-26”

Your pup’s GPS Collar has a rechargeable high capacity lithium-ion. It has 22 hours of battery life when in containment and 14 hours of tracking. It only takes 1 hour to recharge fully.

In terms of the GPS, SpotOn uses a high-sensitivity GPS/GLONASS/Galileo/Beidou receiver. It will never require recalibration so your fence will always stay active, unless you physically turn it off.

SpotOn GPS Fence Cost

The SpotOn GPS Fence costs $1,295. If you’d prefer to pay in installments, the brand offers financing options as low as $59.35/month

In addition to the price of the collar and the app, you’ll choose a monthly, 1-year, or 2-year plan. Prices start at $5.95/month and go up to $9.95/month. Annual and biannual plans offer 90 days free and are billed in one lump sum.

SpotOn GPS Fence: How It Works

SpotOn GPS Fence Review

Unlike messy electric fences, the SpotOn GPS Fence requires no digging – it’s completely signal-based. To ensure you know exactly what to expect, I’ll walk you through how the entire process works below. It’s easier than you think.

  1. Create your custom fence: It can be any size or shape, but it needs to be at least ½ acre and can be as big as thousands of acres. To create the boundary, walk your planned perimeter with SpotOn’s dog collar and your phone. You can also draw the fence in the app, then save it and name it.
  2. Train your dog in 3 steps: Teach your dog to recognize SpotOn’s tones, vibration, and static correction. That last one’s optional. Training will help your dog understand where is and where isn’t ok to roam. GPS uses smart technology to know exactly which direction your dog is facing, ensuring that if your dog leaves the fence he won’t be corrected when coming home. Static correction can be set from level 1 up to 30. If you need extra help, SpotOn offers a free 1:1 training with a certified dog trainer.
  3. Manage it from the app: Create multiple fences for different times of day or locations, activate one, and turn the other off. Get alerts within seconds if your dog leaves the yard or track their current location.

Who Is SpotOn GPS Fence For?

SpotOn GPS Fence Review

The SpotOn GPS Fence isn’t right for every home. There are some general requirements to use it. These include:

  • A ½ acre or larger property
  • A dog with a neck that measures 10-26”
  • A commitment training your dog to the system (this usually takes a week or two)
  • For dogs 6 months or older to ensure they have basic training and are big enough for the collar

SpotOn GPS Fence Reviews: What Do Customers Think?

SpotOn GPS Fence Review

No matter what you buy online, you need to know that it works. That’s where feedback comes in. This section of my SpotOn GPS Fence review is packed with comments and ratings scooped up from around the web, starting with a few from the brand’s own website.

On SpotOnFence.com, the GPS Fence has a 4.5/5 star rating among 61 reviews. The following SpotOn GPS Fence review demonstrates just how useful it can be:

This collar has been a lifesaver for our LGD!!! He unfortunately has been Facebook famous on our community lost and found pet page!! He is able to be out at night working and I feel safe that he is not going off property! The customer service has been FANTASTIC!!!! They always respond right away no matter how small the issue is they are there to help. They also stand 100% behind their products!!

On Amazon, here’s what one customer had to say in their SpotOn GPS review, “I like everything about the collar work well where I live and my dog loves it.” Another comment there was helpful to distinguish between the Gen 1 and Gen 2 device. It read:

I upgraded to the Gen2, and WOW! The changes to the collar and the app bring this to the next level. What hasn’t changed is the amazing job this collar does at tracking your dog. I have tested other collars and have always returned them. They were not reliable at all.”

On the App Store, the GPS Fence has a 4.8/5 star rating among 437 reviews. One read, “The SpotOn collar has been the BEST product we have added to our farm, and the collars have given me such peace of mind for my dogs. We have 28 acres of land, but live close to a busy road. Before SpotOn, our Great Pyrenees had been in the road several times and was almost hit by a car with me watching. By using the collars, I was able to easily set up a virtual fence for the dogs. The dogs trained quickly to the warning tones when they were nearing the fence line. I was able to firsthand witness one of them getting close to the road and turn around as soon as the collar beeped.

There was no shortage of positive reviews on the App Store, so I’ll include one more for good measure.

When I found the spot on collar I had my doubts on if it would work .but it works flawlessly! Cola now has the freedom of her 16 acres. I watch her approach the boundary and stop. No fear no pain. I have her collar set to just vibrate and it is enough for her to respect the boundaries. When I want to check on her location while I’m working It just takes a top on the spot on ap.

Now, the last SpotOn GPS Fence review we’ll look at comes from the Better Business Bureau. It reads:

Overall very happy with my SpotOn Fence and I wish I had gotten it even sooner than I did. Such a game changer for me and more importantly my dog, who can finally enjoy my entire yard and I can focus on work without worrying about him or looking out the window every few minutes.

The same review mentioned great interactions with customer service. It’s clear the GPS Fence has made a positive impact on many homes and pups.

Is SpotOn Legit?

SpotOn GPS Fence Review

Nothing I found during this SpotOn GPS Fence review would convince me otherwise. SpotOn has an A+ score on the Better Business Bureau with a 100% response rate and has recently won an American Business Award (Stevie) for Customer Service. This shows us that not only is the brand legit but it also works hard to respond to and resolve issues.

Is The SpotOn GPS Fence Worth It?

SpotOn GPS Fence Review

The SpotOn GPS Fence isn’t cheap, but it’s worth the price for the peace of mind you get while using it. I like that it comes with a 1-year warranty and a 90-day trial. If you’re on the fence, that’s a good way to see the difference it makes before committing to a subscription.
