Overview of The Citizenry

The Citizenry Review

Created by Carly Nance and Rachel Bentley in 2013, The Citizenry is a fusion of spirit with a love for new places and cultures. Over the years, the two, who became friends in college, began exploring the world.

Filling their suitcases with home items that simply weren’t available in the US, the idea for The Citizenry was sparked. The pair believes that “our homes should be reflections of the journeys we take,” and that extends to beyond where we’ve physically been.

Allowing customers around the world to experience other cultures and appreciate fine craftsmanship, the Dallas-based brand connects people with artisans who use age-old techniques and local materials, while infusing aspects of their own lives and spirit into the very pieces the brand sells online.

But before we dive into the brand’s stirring product lineup, this The Citizenry review will shine some light on its highlights.

Highlights

  • Wide spectrum of home goods, from bedding to rugs to furniture
  • Transparent and ethical production
  • OEKO-Tex Certified
  • Free continental US shipping

The Citizenry Hanging Leather Headboard Review

There’s an unfinished look about beds that don’t have headboards, but some are more cumbersome than they are attractive and useful.

The Hanging Leather Headboard has a slickness about it. Whether that’s from the way it’s coolly suspended on the wall or its smooth, fresh, and supple leather look. We’re not quite sure, but it’s probably both.

Light, simple to hang, and made from ethically sourced cow leather in Portugal, the Hanging Leather Headboard comes in Full/Queen and King/California King sizes for $695 and $975.

Who Is The Citizenry For?

The Citizenry Review

In short, The Citizenry is for people who care about where what’s in their homes came from. It’s all well and good to pick up something from Walmart or even IKEA, but where’s the heart?

The Citizenry puts the lifeblood back into shopping for homeware, connecting consumers to the artisans who produced the stunning pieces they felt taken aback by at first sight.

There’s a story here, something more than a $10 blanket made by who knows, in what kind of factory? The items are a bit pricier, sure, but the price is part of a larger story of fair labor practices, sustainable sourcing, and decades of knowledge.

Comparison: The Citizenry vs. Parachute

The Citizenry Review

It’s 2021 and cheap, fast goods aren’t really ok anymore. People want backstory. They want connection. And they want to know that what’s in their home was purchased ethically and isn’t harming the earth. Brands like The Citizenry do that for consumers, but they’re not the only ones.

In this section of our The Citizenry review, we’ll be doing a quick comparison between Parachute and our featured brand, bringing to light what makes them similar, and what makes them each so unique.

Like our featured brand, Parachute sources items from expert artisans around the world, but perhaps doesn’t have as many partners. There also doesn’t appear to be as much transparency as The Citizenry has, but its competitor still notes where each product is made.

In terms of selection, the two brands are very similar, but The Citizenry looks to have a more traditional and creative aesthetic.

Parachute carries mattresses and baby items alongside home decor, bedding, and bath items, whereas The Citizenry carries a lot of rugs, throw blankets, and furniture.

In terms of price, a comparison of The Citizenry Linen Duvet Cover is $245-$280 and the Parachute Linen Duvet Cover is $210-$270 yielded similar results. Not too far off—both made in Portugal and OEKO-Tex Certified.

While these two brands appear to offer the same kinds of items, they have very different feels to them. Some items are pretty close in price and inventory, but really, what may make someone choose one over the other would be the aesthetics, and perhaps, the more personalized connection with the maker.

The Citizenry Reviews: What Do Customers Think?

The Citizenry Review

The Citizenry offers quite a range of home goods. For that reason, it’s tough to judge on quality—especially from behind a screen.

This section of our The Citizenry review exists for that very reason, and here, we’ll hear from customers who have purchased and tried out a few of the brand’s items to give us an idea of what they’re really like.

Starting with the brand’s website, we found a collection of reviews for the Stonewashed Linen Bedding. One read, “Linen sheets so soft they make soft sheets feel not soft. Sheets that arrive soft and only get better with time, what’s not to like. Quality is as expected, excellent.

Now, we learn a few things from this comment. One, is that these particular types of sheets are super soft. Two, they get softer with every wash, and three, the quality is up there.

To get a little more information on the brand’s sheets, we headed over to a The Citizenry review on PureWow, whose team gave the Stonewashed Linen the following scores:

  • Value: 14/20
  • Durability: 19/20
  • Quality: 19/20
  • Aesthetics: 19/20
  • Comfort: 18/20

An overall rating of 89/100, which is amazing for sheets.

Mentioning how the Stonewashed Linen Sheets wrote, the review read, “Like a great pair of jeans, they get better with wear. Admittedly, when I first unboxed them, I was unsure—the French flax felt almost like burlap…But, with each wash, they softened, becoming cozier and cozier.

What’s great about these sheets is that they’re machine washable, yes, but even though they’re incredibly high quality, they’re not fussy. Take that silk.

Alright, so the sheets check out, but how about other home items? We turned to Reviewed.com to get the scoop about the Dasar Bronze Bowls and Mahaba Coasters.

Of the bowls, The Citizenry review revealed, “The Dasar bowls hold weight—you can tell the material is of higher quality than most gold or copper-plated bowls.” And even with this look of high quality, they’re a pretty affordable price: $75 for two.

About the coasters, it continued, “While I expected the hand-woven palm leaves to feel rough to the touch, the material ended up being extremely soft—almost like satin—due to how tightly and meticulously the coasters are wound.

From this, we learn of just how high quality the brand’s goods really are—no matter what they are. Made with care, whatever the product, The Citizenry’s collections check out.

Is The Citizenry Worth It?

The Citizenry Review

To say the selection offered at The Citizenry is gorgeous is an understatement. Its items ooze beauty in every facet of the word.

Supporting communities, paying workers fairly, sourcing sustainably…the inner workings of this company are admirable, inspiring, and hopeful, and then we come to the actual products themselves.

With a full spectrum of intricately detailed and carefully crafted items, with The Citizenry, you can create a home with purposeful pieces that you love and feel good about purchasing. Even though they’re a bit pricey, that’s to be expected with items like this and doesn’t knock our belief that they’re worth the buy.

The Citizenry Promotions & Discounts

The Citizenry Review

The brand works very hard to pay its workers fairly for their projects and pieces. They cut out the middleman, buying directly from the source and selling online to give you lower prices than what you’d find in local boutiques.

For those reasons, throughout this The Citizenry review we didn’t spot a lot of promotions, but we did find that they offer free continental US shipping. Hey, every little bit helps right? For more information on discounts, be sure to sign up for the brand’s newsletter.

Where to Buy The Citizenry

The Citizenry Review

This brand is an online marketplace of sorts, connecting you with artisans around the world.

For that reason, though you can find the brand’s artisans within their local communities, to find those items without ever stepping foot out of your door and hopping on a plane, the only place to get them is directly from The-Citizenry.com.

FAQ

The Citizenry Review

Why The Name “The Citizenry”?

The Citizenry stands for the faces behind the brand’s products. It’s a celebration of talented craftsmen and women with unique stories, backgrounds, and skills.

Is The Citizenry Ethical?

Yes, that’s its whole bit. The Citizenry carries ethically made items that are sourced ethically.

Who Are The Citizenry’s Artisan Partners?

The list is quite long, but it ranges from small artisan workshops like Bogotá Weaving Shop in Colombia which has just 14 workers to the Weavers of Mardin in Guatemala who have 1,800 artisans. The Citizenry has also partnered with shops in Ireland, Japan, Morocco, and India, and many other countries.

Are The Citizenry’s Artisan Partners Paid Fairly?

The Citizenry says they pay their artisan partners under “fair trade standards.” They also invest 10% of the profits back into the communities where those artisans are located with entrepreneur development grants.

Does The Citizenry Have A Trade Program?

They sure do. To join, The Citizenry needs a few things from you:

  1. Link to your website OR a copy of your business card
  2. Copy of your business license, resale certificate, or VAT registration

Once you get every scanned and ready to go, attach it all in an email to [email protected].

  1. Ground Shipping 7-10 business days free
  2. Premium 4-6 business days $TBD

Normally, orders are sent out within 4 business days, but sometimes, due to the handcrafted nature of the products, shipments may be delayed.

What Is The Citizenry’s Return Policy?

Things always look different on a computer screen than they do in your own home. The Citizenry has a 30-day return policy in place for that very reason. Set it up, lay it down, create a little space of your own design. If it doesn’t work? Send it on back.

Before we get into the nitty-gritty of the policy, we thought it would be good to note here that returns for store credit and exchanges are free. It’s only returns for full refunds that you’ll need to pay return shipping for.

For a full refund, certain orders will have restocking fees, while others won’t—take a look at what we mean:

  • The order includes just bedding and towels: no fees
  • Everything else: $25
  • Your order includes oversized items: $65

When it comes time to send your return back, though The Citizenry invites you to try out your items in your home, they need to be undamaged and in original condition with the packaging they came with.

To make a return, follow these steps:

  1. Head to the Returns Portal on the brand’s website
  2. Enter your order number and zip code
  3. Download the shipping label
