Overview of The Black Tux

The Black Tux suits review

Groom Andrew Blackmon, and groomsmen Patrick Coyne, realized that renting a tuxedo could be a less tedious and a far more enjoyable experience. While preparing for Andrew’s wedding in 2011, the two came across a viable business opportunity, in which they would provide men a more convenient alternative to tuxedo and suit shopping.

From there, The Black Tux was founded in 2013 in the sunny state of Los Angeles, California. “At one point Patrick and Andrew asked themselves, how could this experience be easier and more enjoyable? They decided to start a company that would give people a better option for renting a tux.

Black Tux partners with only the best suit manufacturers to ensure the top quality and fit. According to the company, their tuxedos and suits are the quality equivalent of a $1200+ garment found in a retail store.

The Black Tux uses 100% merino wool for their suiting, 100% cotton for shirting, and real leather for their premium shoes. This company gained fame over the years, having been featured in numerous publications. You may have even seen The Black Tux commercial online.

How does The Black Tux Work?

The Black Tux suits review

The Black Tux provides its customers with two options: they can either choose to rent or purchase from their collection. In terms of renting, the company has an easy three-step process. The Black Tux suits review will outline their guidelines in the following paragraphs.

First, customers must choose which style of suit or tuxedo they like. Users can shop through availability by event date, if you are renting for yourself or for your fellow groomsmen, or if it’s available to try on.

On the subject of The Black Tux how to measure for a suit, you are then to fill out The Black Tux fit survey after you’ve picked out your design. This short quiz utilizes their fit algorithm, which recommends the best sizes for you based on your answers.

To be extra sure of your size preferences, their team of in-house fit specialists will review every order for accuracy. Once a customer decides on the size that works best, they will send the suit to try on at home. You have up to 48 hours to decide if the fit is right.

The Black Tux suits review

If you’d rather try the tux on in-person, that’s absolutely an option as well. Customers can visit their nearest showroom to try on their garments in real-time. If the suit doesn’t fit, you can request a second size within 48 hours of your original delivery. If you choose to buy your tuxedo, you can request a replacement size.

In terms of renting, your order will be delivered in 2 weeks before your event so you can check the fit. When you choose to buy from The Black Tux, your items are shipped upon ordering. The company recommends ordering at least 21 days prior to the event date. After the occasion is over, customers must simply pack their suits in the original box and return them with the prepaid return label.

The Black Tux Peak Lapel Tuxedo Review

There’s nothing more timeless and classic than a traditional black tuxedo. If you’re a fan of this iconic look, try the Peak Lapel Tuxedo out for size. This tuxedo features the classic upward-pointing lapel that helps frame your face and elongate your frame.

The material is made out of 100% superfine Italian merino wool and 100% silk satin for the peak lapels. Fastened with a one-button closure with sewn side vents and fully canvassed, this tuxedo gives off a sharp and sleek silhouette.

This Black Tux piece also comes with a matching jacket and pants. For rent, the Peak Lapel Tuxedo costs $125. To purchase, this set costs $450

The Black Tux Blue Tuxedo Review

Available in a stark midnight blue, the Blue Tuxedo is the perfect look to wear if your special occasion is set near the beach overlooking the stars above. According to the website, the color midnight blue was a fad due to the invention of blue light in 2014 (which caused the blue wool to appear blacker than black).

Coming in Italian merino wool and silk satin for the lapels, this tuxedo would look amazing with a classic black bowtie and a standard white button-up underneath.

With its one-button closure, side vents, and fully canvassed, you’ll be the talk of the town. To rent, The Blue Tuxedo costs $125. If you’d like to purchase this beauty, it will cost you $450

The Black Tux White Dinner Jacket Tuxedo Review

The White Dinner Jacket Tuxedo is the ideal outfit to show off if you’re aiming for a minimalistic themed wedding. Think of museum white walls, silver cutlery, and brightly colored perennials. According to The Black Tux, this was originally a warm-weather alternative to the standard black tux, but nowadays it’s suited for any type of environment.

Made in the same Italian merino wool material and grosgrain silk for the peak lapels, this tuxedo also has the classic one-button closure, side vents, and is fully canvassed. As seen on the model, pair this creamy white tuxedo with a black bow tie and matching fitted pants.

If you’d like to rent the White Dinner Jacket Tuxedo for one night, it costs $125. To purchase, it costs $450

The Black Tux Navy Suit Review

If your special occasion doesn’t warrant an overly fancy tuxedo, you can opt for the Navy Suit for a less formal look. However, this doesn’t mean it sacrifices in class. This deep ocean blue jacket provides a sophisticated and modern silhouette that’s perfect for cocktail evenings, office parties, and even prom night.

The material is made out of a super high-quality, Italian merino wool. This suit also features a two-button closure, notch lapels, side vents, and is fully canvassed.

To look classy and cool, rent the Navy Suit for just $110. If you want to keep this number all to yourself, it’s available to purchase for $375.

The Black Tux Charcoal Suit Review

If you’re going to an office party and need a more formal and professional corporate look, you might want to opt for the Tux Charcoal Suit.

Made out of graphite toned Italian merino wool, this suit is perfect for when you want to show up with a little bit more class to impress your boss, your coworkers, or coworker (wink, wink, nudge, nudge).

This charcoal suit wouldn’t be complete without a standard black tie, matching gray pants, and Italian leather shoes. Coming with a two-button closure, notch lapels, side vents, and full canvas, the Charcoal Suit can be your closet favorite for just $375. You can also rent this number for just $110.

Watch heads turn when you show up to your next office party in this sleek look.

The Black Tux Light Grey Suit Review

The Light Grey Suit can be considered a more ‘friendlier’ option than the Charcoal Suit. This is probably due to the fact that the grey is a lighter tone, which is overall refreshing and ‘sunnier’ throughout its design.

Made out of 100% superfine Italian merino wool, with the same two-button closure, notch lapels, and side vents, this suit is still considered classic in design.

Instead of opting for a matching grey tie and shirt, try pairing the suit with a dark blue necktie and a pastel blue button down to bring out the cool tones within the suit. The Light Grey Suit can be rented out for $110 or purchased for $375

The Black Tux Tan Suit Review

The Tan Suit from the Black Tux is the suit you’d definitely want to wear at that particular party serving glasses of sparkling champagne and fancy charcuterie boards.

This light tan option is great for warm weather gatherings, such as laidback networking events at a fancy restaurant and bar. This specific style was designed by Ovadia & Sons, a contemporary menswear brand

Made out of their signature 100% Italian merino wool, this design has all of the classic features that you can find in a traditional suit. This suit includes a two-button closure, notch lapels, side vents, and is fully canvassed.

Pair this champagne toned suit with a white button-down shirt, matching trousers, and a navy or black tie, for a slightly color-blocked effect. To rent the Tan Suit, it’s a mere $110. However, you also purchase it for $375

The Black Tux Black Suit Review

Considered a less formal version of the Peak Lapel Tuxedo, the Black Suit still keeps the same amount of class, but without it looking too sophisticated. This all-black number is perfect for any kind of occasion, including a fancy dinner party, a wedding reception, or a more formal office party.

Featuring the same Italian merino wool material with its two-button closure, notch lapels, and side events, this suit can pair with any button-down or tie. After all, black does go with everything. The Black Suit costs just $110 to rent and $375 to fully purchase as a staple for your wardrobe.

Is The Black Tux Worth It?

The Black Tux suits review

The Black Tux suits review recommends this online-based menswear company for anybody that’s looking for a more convenient and affordable way to get a tuxedo or suit.

One of the main advantages of renting their suits online is that it saves you the hassle of going to a boutique, getting tailoring adjustments, and other added responsibilities. If you’re helping to coordinate a wedding, chances are that you’ll be pretty busy. However, BlackTux makes everything quick and easy for those on a time crunch.

In terms of purchasing their garments, their prices are reasonable compared to other competing brands, and they don’t sacrifice quality for quantity. All of their designs are classic, timeless, and can be worn for any event or occasion.

There are also countless positive reviews that point to the legitimacy of this company. However, there are repeated sizing issues, which don’t reflect positively on the accuracy of their fit algorithm. If you’re tired of the traditional way of getting a formal tux or suit, The Black Tux is a great alternative.

NEVER USE BLACKTUX

Blacktux gauranteed a fit, delivery and never delivered on either. I was not able to wear a matching suit to my own Son’s wedding because Blacktux never delivered the proper suit, even after promising to deliver the suit to venue on the day of the wedding.

Blue Suit Nightmare-I would not recommend this company to my worst enemy!

Experience

My experience with The Black Tux started well but was a nightmare and very stressful, especially as we got close to our wedding day. I was renting a navy blue suit for my wedding. I expected a few challenges due to covid, but that’s why I started the suit rental process early for my June 20, 2021 wedding. I needed a navy blue suit for myself, my best man, and my groomsman. I was looking to schedule an appointment at the beginning of March, but the first appointment that worked with my schedule was on 4/2/2021. I went to my fitting, and the woman working with us said that we had plenty of time, recommending that we submit our order about 3-4 weeks before the event. One disappointment was that we could not try on on the suits, rather we could only try on a black tux. We didn’t want to risk not getting our suits and paid for them on 4/11/2021.
We wanted navy blue suits instead of tuxedos because we had a daytime wedding, and the bridesmaids were wearing light blue dresses. My best man and I went for our fitting at the Chicago Showroom by my other groomsman who lives in North Carolina. We decided to use The Black Tux because everyone was able to visit a location to get fitted. My first issue with The Black Tux was that my groomsman in North Carolina needed wide shoes which were not available. Neither one of us could make the edits online, I tried calling and after waiting on hold for over an hour, I hung up. I then called later in the day and waited 2 hours before someone answered the phone to modify the order. It would be much more convenient to allow customers to modify parts of their order online. Everything was all set, so we could focus on everything else for the wedding, or so we thought.
I received an email on 5/24/2021 saying that my order was being prepared. They said that I should receive my order 14 days before my event (June 6th), so that I can try on my suit to make sure everything fits correctly. They sent me an email on June 8th at 6:07 pm that my suit was not available. They did not have the courtesy to call and when I called a few minutes later, their customer service call center was closed. My groomsman who lives in North Carolina also got the same email.
Their suggestion was to get a suit in another size or a different style. Isn’t the purpose of a fitting to get a suit that is the correct size? Also, I wanted a navy blue suit, they did not have any other styles that were somewhat close to what I wanted. If they didn’t have the inventory, couldn’t they have told me when I placed my order or possibly ordered a new suit from their manufacturer?
I started calling the next morning (June 9th) as soon as they opened, at 8 am. In case there were any connection issues, I called from my cell phone and home phone. After about 2 hours both lines were answered and immediately disconnected. I ended up leaving work so that I could go to the Chicago Showroom. I met with the showroom manager and I explained the situation. He told me that 50 wedding parties had their entire orders canceled due to inventory issues but that did not count our wedding party (although 66% of our order could not be fulfilled) because my best man’s suit was being shipped (but late). He was also getting married the same day as my wife and me when I asked him if he got his suit from The Black Tux and he said no, he went somewhere else.
I was working with this manager for over 3 hours. He was trying to find anything that could potentially be altered to fit. He kept checking with the warehouses but they essentially had no inventory. He was able to get a suit that was too large and the warehouse was supposed to get it sent overnight, with delivery by 10 am on Friday, June 11th. This time was important so that we could get to the tailor to drop off the suit before we were going out of town for final wedding tasks.
I then checked with Jos A Bank and The Men’s Warehouse. They did not have any available navy blue suits in their inventory but I could not be upset with them because it was last minute. When I could not rent anywhere, we were looking to purchase. The stores said they would have to order the navy blue suits but the tailors were also behind schedule. We found navy blue suits at Von Maur that were available between 2 different locations. The tailor at Von Maur said their normal time frame would be the following Friday, which would have been in time for the wedding but we were leaving on Wednesday to go back to Des Moines for the wedding and pre-events.
The Black Tux was a last resort and luckily Von Maur came through. The tailor was able to get our navy blue suits by Tuesday just in time for us to leave. The Black Tux agreed to give a full refund on 7/7/2021. Other than the wedding, I did not have a need to buy the suit, thus I was renting, expecting to pay about $150 per person. The suits that we were able to get ended up costing $760 per person after tax. This was a lot more money than we anticipated spending, not to mention all of the stress and time that I had to waste dealing with The Black Tux.
I trusted the positive reviews on some websites but I should have looked deeper. The Black Tux has an F with the Better Business Bureau. I filed a complaint with the BBB to try to get a resolution from The Black Tux, but they never responded to the BBB either.
Whatever you do, do not trust your special events to The Black Tux! Do additional research, I’m confident that you will find other reviews with other bad experiences.

Support emailed me that they did not have my pants size, 8 days before the wedding and I ordered over 4 months in advance. I emailed back with no response. Called, was on hold for over two hours. When I connected with an agent and explained my issue, the agent hung up on me.

My service experience with them was horrible. 2 hour hold times for customer service. 1 week prior to wedding after holding for 2 hours they tell me they can’t guarantee I’ll have my Tux rental. So the 14 days in advance arrival of tux is a lie. I’m giving away the bride (my niece) and the father of the groom both of us with the same issues.

I would suggest calling them. Hopefully they are more responsive. I submitted a ticket April 23. It is now May 6 and no response. I had reached out to my local store by phone and call was not returned. So i emailed my local rep and got an autoresponder email stating the store is now closed. That’s actually why I’m looking up reviews now in case I need to change providers for my June wedding.
