Overview of Function of Beauty

Function of Beauty Hair Review

Function of Beauty was created in 2015 by a serious power trio—an engineer, a navy vet, and a chemist—and is headquartered in New York. Impressive to say the least, but I wondered how that translates to customer personal care. Turns out, very well, through a list of values they don’t compromise on.

Advocates for change and doing things differently, Josh, Zahir, and Hien let their imaginations run wild and launched the brand in 2015, spearheading the custom hair and body care movement by designing the first ever facility that could handle literally trillions of possibilities.

Based in Pennsylvania, I value that all of its products are custom filled in the USA, and am in awe of the seemingly endless number of formulas its factory can handle. Function of Beauty wants to carve their own path, to break the rules, to take risks and to envision a new normal to offer the very best in hair and body care, and I think they’ve certainly done that.

With individual preferences, hair and skin types, moods, styles, and passions, I believe our individuality is worth designing products for, and Function supports this right. Every person’s hair and skin have different needs, and the products they use should be unique to their texture and composition.

Your skin requires the perfect ecology to keep it at its healthiest, I read in this study[3]. Similarly, the hair is also a site of diverse organisms that play an important role in immune function, so hair and skincare are far deeper than just physical.

No two people have an alike formula (and if so, it’s very rare), so Function is like the snowflake of brands—every product is different[4]. How do you find your perfect formula? The core staple is the Function of Beauty hair quiz which allows you to formulate and customize your own haircare solution. I’ll get into that next.

Function of Beauty Custom Haircare Quiz Review

I took a tour of the Haircare & Hair Quiz to get a sense of how things work for this Function of Beauty hair review.

Verdict? It’s simple and fun! You know yourself best, so filling in the details of the locks you brush and wash should be a breeze. First, you’ll identify whether your hair is straight, wavy, curly, or coily.

Function of beauty hair quiz review

Next, the team gets into assessing your hair structure, and you describe your tresses as fine, medium, or course. After that, you clarify the moisture level between dry, normal, and oily.

Then it gets a bit more detailed. You can select up to 5 hair goals, with a minimum of one.

Function of beauty hair quiz review

Believe me, your finger will be clicking on that mouse pad when you see the goals you can choose:

  1. Deep condition
  2. Fix split ends
  3. Hydrate
  4. Replenish hair
  5. Strengthen
  6. Anti-ageing
  7. Color protection
  8. Lengthen
  9. Thermal protection
  10. Volumize
  11. Anti-frizz
  12. Curl definition
  13. Nourish roots
  14. Shine
  15. Soothe scalp
  16. Straighten
  17. Oil Control
  18. Reduce brassiness

I clicked on everything to do with damage repair and moisture and went on my way. I personally like that you can select a silicone-free formula for your shampoo and conditioner if you like, though if you’re ok with silicones, they apparently give the products a little more slip.

Silicone, which is explored in this study[5], is not water-soluble and can remain on your hair and lead to it becoming dull and drier. However, it can also protect the hair shaft from abrasive damage and increase the body of your hair. It’s a catch 22, but totally up to you.

After a short mental debate about silicone, you’ll get to customize your fragrance. Here’s a list of their delightful options:

Nude (p)each, Strike a (r)ose, (Pear)fection, All(you)calyptus, True l(o)vender, and Fragrance free. New scents include Floret, and takes two to (m)ango. I’m totally loving the puns here, by the way.

I love that I get to determine how strong I want the fragrance to be (light, medium, or strong) and that I could have a pleasantly subtle scent[6] if I like, as some shampoos can be quite powerful in a steamy shower.

Function of beauty hair quiz review

Finally, choose from a variety of bright colors (or none) and add the most important personal touch – your name!

Function of Beauty Hair Review 1

After you check out, I think the hardest part is waiting for your customized Function of Beauty products to arrive.

Function of Beauty offers shampoos, conditioners, leave-in shampoos, hair masks, hair serum, body wash, body lotion, and its newest addition, custom skincare. Let’s dive into the brand’s top sellers.

Function of Beauty Shampoo and Conditioner Review

First of all, I’m in love with these colors, but I appreciate that if I preferred, I don’t have to have a color at all. The Function of Beauty Shampoo & Conditioner is a bright, beautiful and bold bestseller, sold in fantastic colors like lavender, teal, and bubble gum pink.

Bringing fun and energy to shower time, these bright beauties are totally customizable to reflect your personality, needs, taste, and of course, hair goals. Me? I like sunkissed yellow paired with (m)ango scents. With colors like these, your partner certainly won’t mistake their shampoo for yours—unless they do it on purpose.

Function hair products are free of sulfates and parabens, entirely vegan, and cruelty-free. So what’s the deal with sulfates and parabens, anyway? Sulfates are a cleaning agent which essentially strips the hair of its natural oils in an effort to cleanse it of all debris. Parabens[7] are used to increase the shelf-life of the product by preventing the growth of bacteria and fungi.

Though these things sound great, they can actually over strip your hair and harm your scalp. Better that Function leaves them out.

You can also customize your purchase so that your formula is produced free of silicone, dyes, and fragrances. It really is all up to you. And what I personally loved, was that in the natural formulations there are up to 60 natural ingredients[8].

The recommended use is 1-2 pumps of Function Shampoo applied to wet hair. Massage the shampoo into a lather, rinse, and repeat if necessary.

You can tell you’re using enough Function Conditioner if you coat your strands of hair evenly from mid-shaft to the ends. Once you’ve applied the conditioner, leave it for 1-2 minutes before rinsing thoroughly.

Function of Beauty Shampoo & Conditioner comes in two sizes: 8 oz ($30) and 16 oz ($50).

Function of Beauty Purple Shampoo Review

Purple shampoo has been a life saver for me and so many others that deal with too-yellow strands after going blonde. Function of Beauty Purple Shampoo is formulated for blonde and grey hair, and those with bleached or highlighted hair.

The deep purple pigments resolve brassy tones in blonde hair. It’s simple color science, really, but one that actually works. Though purple shampoo promises similar results across the board, this one by Function also increases shine and helps your color to last longer[9].

When it comes to using the Purple Shampoo, you should apply it to any brassy areas and let it sit for 2-3 minutes. Function of Beauty reviews indicate that you may want to apply it for longer if you’re especially brassy. Rinse all of it out and then add a Function of Beauty Conditioner to seal the deal.

Function’s Purple Shampoo comes in two sizes: 8 oz ($30) and 16 oz ($37).

Function of Beauty Leave-in Treatment Review

I’ve totally stressed out my hair, so products like the Function of Beauty Leave-in Treatment are the ones I usually reach for. Made to meet the hair goals you’ve set your sights on, this ultra-lightweight formulas helps smooth, hydrate, and protect your hair.

I think it’s a great sidekick for shampoo and conditioner, plus, I love that it’s a multi-use product. Function says that it can go on either wet or dry, but the best time to apply it is right after your shower. Tousle through strands for best results.

Similar to the other hair products, this one is meant to fit you and your life, so you can use it on wash days, in between washes or for a touchup on the fly. The best part? You don’t have to rinse!

It’s recommended for all hair types, so all locks are welcome. Tousle it in, and away you go! Grab a bottle for $20.

Function of Beauty Hair Mask Review

You’ve heard of a face mask but have you heard of a hair mask? Thick and intensive, the Function of Beauty Hair Mask will pique your interest, either way. So what’s in a jar?

A serious deep conditioning treatment made with Japanese sake extract, argan oil, jojoba ester oil, and a blend of natural ingredients to complement your hair goals.

Japanese sake extract[10] is an alcohol made from rice and water and has been tested within labs and on living organisms to show that it is an anti-melanogenic ingredient[11] that encourages hair growth and repairs damage.

Jojoba ester oil has been proven to reduce dryness, moisturize and provide strength to damaged hair. This is due to its performance as an emollient, thanks to its chemical composition as the product of transesterification of jojoba oil, as described in this study[12].

The Hair Mask is designed for in-shower use and it gives you a lift in moisture, hydration and nourishment. I consider it a ‘treat yo’self’ kind of product. Coat your hair with the mask after shampooing and conditioning.

Pro tip: Make sure you get an even application from shafts to ends. For best results, I read you should leave the mask in for the recommended time and use it once or twice per week. This Function of Beauty shower treatment is available in 7.5 oz bottles for $20.

Function of Beauty Hair Serum Review

I’ve seen a lot of great Function of Beauty hair products that can bring your mane to the next level, and the Hair Serum is the final touch. It smoothes away those flyaways, keeps pesky frizz in place, and elevates your shine.

The serum is 100% customizable too, and is a blend of argan, jojoba, and sunflower oils, along with a melange of other natural ingredients.

The serum is proven to reduce frizz by 70%, increase shine 26x more than untreated hair, improve detangling by 75%, and thermally protect hair from damage up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Seriously impressive. Function of Beauty Hair Serum comes in 3 oz for $25

When it comes to use, warm a small amount of the product in your hands. Apply the serum to damp or wet hair, then distribute it evenly from mid-shafts to the ends using your fingers. Be sure to avoid the roots and don’t rinse out! Lastly, style it and enjoy.

Function of Beauty Hair Reviews: What Do Customers Think?

Function of Beauty Hair Review

After getting to know the products and the possibilities, it’s important that I look into what customers are saying about them.

Let’s start with the fact that Function of Beauty has over 73,000 five-star reviews on its website—that’s a lot of happy customers! One shared their experience and said the following:

I 100% enjoyed both these products, from the smell to how my hair felt. It also made my oily hair last longer without washing! One critique I have seen is that people not used to a natural shampoo found it oily, I myself chose oil control as one of the additions, this may help with that issue. Will be buying again!

Others frequently mentioned how their hair is left super soft, and hydrated after washing. One customer said that Function was the only product that they would use for their hair, and would continue to order their formulation without a single doubt. That’s really saying something.

One customer remarked that Function had done wonders for their hair. The Function of Beauty review read:

“I have used their shampoos and conditioners for about half a year now. It has made such a difference in my hair that I have now started testing their face serum and I’m going to order custom body wash and lotion! I’m completely sold on this company from all the products I’ve tested so far.”

A constant compliment I noted from customers is that Function made their hair “squeaky clean.” The happy buyers loved the smell, thought the quality was excellent—higher than any drugstore products.

All in all, what I found wasn’t too surprising considering my belief in custom hair care, but I was super happy that customers are having such great experiences nonetheless. Everyone’s hair care journey is going to be different, but custom options make the path a little more straightforward.
