About Olipop

Olipop Soda Review

There’s something about soda that’s just so…addicting. Maybe it’s the millions of tiny bubbles mixed with the sweet complexity of lab-concocted junk that really does it for us. Or the chemicals that are slowly, but surely, wreaking havoc on our stomachs and intestinal lining.

Whatever it is, people around the world struggle to give the sugary, bubbly stuff up, despite knowing how toxic it can be.

Olipop is like an anti-soda of sorts. In fact, it’s categorized as more of a health tonic. Launched in 2017, and a product of years of research by founder Bed Goodwin, the brand works to give those looking to quell a craving for a fizzy beverage a better alternative.

But it doesn’t just stop there. The key ingredients in Olipop are its mixture of prebiotics, fiber, and botanicals, which work together to help your body better absorb nutrients, feed the good bacteria in your gut, and reduce inflammation.

The brand’s health-inspired take on soda has landed it some major attention. With its old-school style packaging and delicious taste, it’s no wonder that Forbes, PureWOW, and Food & Beverage Magazine have also jumped on the Olipop craze—one that’s currently taking over.

Ingredients

Olipop Soda Review

When browsing the Olipop nutrition facts and ingredients label of its sodas, I came across something called “OLISMART.”

A mix of prebiotics and tummy-friendly plants that work to aid the digestive process and feed the probiotics in your gut, this blend includes the following ingredients:

Cassava root fiber

Cassava root fiber is a source of dietary fiber that can support digestive health, aid in regular bowel movements, and promote a feeling of fullness, which may be beneficial for weight management and appetite control.

Chicory root inulin

Chicory root inulin is a prebiotic fiber that serves as a food source for beneficial gut bacteria. It can help support a healthy gut microbiome, improve digestion, enhance nutrient absorption, and potentially boost immune function.

Nopal cactus

Nopal cactus is rich in fiber and antioxidants, which can help regulate blood sugar levels, promote satiety, and support digestive health. It may also have anti-inflammatory properties and contribute to heart health.

Jerusalem artichoke inulin

Jerusalem artichoke inulin is another prebiotic fiber that promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut. It supports digestive health, aids in regular bowel movements, and may help regulate blood sugar levels.

Calendula flower

Calendula flower has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. It can be used topically to soothe and heal skin irritations, such as cuts, burns, rashes, and wounds.

Marshmallow root

Marshmallow root contains mucilage, a gel-like substance that coats and soothes the throat and digestive tract. It can provide relief from conditions like sore throat, cough, acid reflux, and gastrointestinal inflammation.

Slippery elm bark

Slippery elm bark is rich in mucilage and can help soothe and protect the digestive system. It is often used to alleviate symptoms of heartburn, gastritis, and gastrointestinal disorders such as ulcerative colitis.

Kudzu root

Kudzu root has been used in traditional medicine for its various health benefits. It may help alleviate symptoms of alcohol hangover, reduce alcohol cravings, improve cardiovascular health, and provide relief from menopausal symptoms.

You’ll find the same formula in each one of the brand’s sodas, totaling 8 mouth-watering flavors, sold in cases of 12 pops. I’ll dive into all of them in the next section of this Olipop soda review.

Olipop Soda Classic Grape

Traditional grape soda has always been the one that’s terribly sweet, overloading your tastebuds with flavor. Olipop Classic Grape captures the essence of that flavor but does it in a totally natural way with the deep, satisfying taste of Concord grape juice.

As a fun twist, Olipop adds a burst of lime to brighten up this candy-like flavor, creating a refreshing, light, and tasty treat for just 45 calories a pop. Grab a case of Classic Grape for $36.

Olipop Soda Orange Cream

Zesty orange swirled with dreamy vanilla cream, Orange Cream may just take you back to days spent chasing the ice cream truck. Taking taste to a whole new level, this tantalizing tonic combines tangerine and mandarin to create a new spin on this throwback flavor.

With just 50 calories per can—take that frozen sugar-bomb! A case of Olipop Orange Cream is $36.

Olipop Soda Vintage Cola

There’s something so magical about the taste of Coca-Cola. Dating back to the late 1800s, Coke has been a long-time American favorite that’s made its way around the world.

When making a cola, it’s kind of important it stays true to its roots, which is why Olipop made its Vintage Cola taste just like it did back in the day.

You’ll get the depth of vanilla and caramel, backed with a touch of uplifting cinnamon and a satisfying sweetness instead of that heavy syrup taste modern Coke has come to have. Each can serves up just 35 calories and 2 grams of sugar per can.

Enjoy classic taste with a case of Olipop Vintage Cola for $36.

Olipop Soda Cherry Vanilla

A freshly baked pie sits in the window to cool. The cool breeze sends wafts of a sweet and sugary cherry aroma in your direction. A mad dash to dig in.

Cherry Vanilla captures the essence of grandma’s secret recipe, melding the tart, sweetness of morello and rainier cherries, with the creamy depth of vanilla bean. Olipop is all about balance, so it provides a nice contrast with a touch of lime juice and sea salt in this 45 calorie indulgence.

Grab a 12-pack of Olipop Cherry Vanilla for $36.

Olipop Soda Strawberry Vanilla

If you’re a fan of cream soda, Olipop Strawberry Vanilla may be the one for you. Some say it tastes like marshmallows, others love the refreshing hit of lemon and subtly salty taste that balances out the sweetness of the strawberries.

And though this particular flavor is just short of whip cream and two straws, it clocks in at just 35 calories and 3 grams of sugar. Pick up a case of this Olipop drink for $36.

Olipop Soda Orange Squeeze

Orange Squeeze has more of a concentrated orange flavor like Sunkist. Tasting like a mouthful of sunshine, this soda combines clementine and mandarin juices along with lemon for a thirst-quenching treat on a hot summer day.

Maintaining the same high vitamin C content in real citrus, Olipop Orange Squeeze also has acerola cherry and rose hips for added antioxidants. Wake up your taste buds with a case for $36.

Olipop Soda Classic Root Beer

Root beer is one of the more complex tasting sodas. For the traditional soda lovers at heart, Classic Root Beer blends the creaminess of vanilla with the spicy hit of burdock root.

No artificial taste here—everything is naturally sourced and bursting with satisfying flavors, yet contains just 35 calories and 2 grams of sugar. Pop a case of Olipop Root Beer in your cart for $36.

Olipop Soda Ginger Lemon

One of Olipop’s most popular flavors, Ginger Lemon is something like a ginger beer fused with zesty citrus. It’s spicy, tangy, and a little bit exotic.

This soda uses natural mulling spice flavor and cinnamon to bring you a taste of the islands but keeps things light, sweet, and gut-friendly. Enjoy poured over ice on a particularly hot day, or garnish it up with a cinnamon stick and a funky straw for a taste of the tropics.

Chill out with a case of Olipop Ginger Lemon for $36.

What Makes Olipop Soda Different Than Regular Soda?

Olipop Soda Review

To put it plainly, Olipop is actually good for your health. Containing prebiotics to support digestive health, it also contains just 2-5 grams of sugar, 35-45 calories, and around 6-7 grams of carbs.

Compare that to traditional soda, which typically has over 30 grams of sugar, 150 calories, and 30 grams of carbs. Regular soda also contains yucky substances like phosphoric acid, and if you’re a Diet fan, aspartame.

The last two actually do a pretty good job at destroying the beneficial bacteria in your gut, so really, Olipop and regular soda are like night and day.

Comparison: Olipop vs. Poppi

Olipop Soda Review

For decades, people happily drank soda without a second thought. Considering what else the 1950s told us was ok, I’m not surprised its harmful effects weren’t breaking news until years later.

Today, people still love the fizzy, sweet drink, they’re just smarter about what they put into their bodies. And thankfully, there have been multiple emerging brands that help us satisfy our love for soda, without the harmful after-effects.

I’m quite astounded with our featured brand, but it turns out, it’s not the only one of its kind. In this section of my Olipop soda review, I’ll introduce you to Poppi, a prebiotic soda that uses apple cider vinegar as its star ingredient.

Poppi’s website is pretty amazing, with bright colors, fun fonts, and quirky text. The brand makes it exciting just to read about its sodas.

Offering nine tasty flavors like Strawberry Lemon, Raspberry Rose, and Cola, you’ll be reminded of sodas you know and love while enjoying refreshing new takes. If you’re wondering about how the whole apple cider vinegar thing works, Poppi assures us that it uses yummy fruit juices that sort of mask its powerful flavor and that its soda is nothing short of delicious.

Each can has 25 calories, 5 grams of sugar, and 2 grams of fiber. And different from our featured brand, the apple cider vinegar in Poppi is the prebiotic element in its drinks, but like Olipop, it uses stevia to keep sugar content low.

I’m assuming these two brands are going to have very different tastes. Apple cider vinegar tends to have a bit of an afterbite, no matter how you mix it, and Olipop’s variety of prebiotics seem more appealing, providing more food for the bacteria in your gut, along with antioxidants, and anti-inflammatories.

How do the tastes compare? It’s a personal thing. To find out more, read the next section of this Olipop soda review.

Olipop Soda Reviews: What Do Customers Think?

Olipop Soda Review

Olipop is a wellness drink, so its success hangs on it being tasty and beneficial. Because I haven’t had the pleasure of sipping back on one of the brand’s ice-cold concoctions, I’m going to need a little help from customers to find out what it’s really like.

For this section of my Olipop soda review, I hit up all corners of the web in a search for helpful feedback. Ahead, you’ll find a collection of ratings, as stated on the brand’s website, that showcase customers’ enjoyment with the healthy sodas. After that, I’ll get into the comments (updated as of June, 2023).

  • Orange Cream: an average of 4.89/5 stars from 108 reviews
  • Strawberry Vanilla: an average of 4.5/5 stars from 813 reviews
  • Olipop Classic Root Beer: an average of 4.52/5 stars from 691 reviews
  • Olipop Cola: an average of 4.4/5 stars from 470 reviews
  • Ginger Lemon: an average of 4.5/5 stars from 817 reviews
  • Cherry Vanilla: an average of 4.46/5 stars from 640 reviews

Olipop is first and foremost a tasty treat, so most of the feedback is going to be about its flavors. Based on the numbers listed above, I chose to take a look at the brand’s most popular option, Ginger Lemon.

In general, customers find it hard to pick a favorite, but many say Ginger Lemon is it.

Writing of its “light and refreshing” qualities, I came across one Olipop soda review that described the taste in a little more detail. It read, “My favorite flavor of Olipop! Very natural taste, obviously has lots of real ginger. Very refreshing. I haven’t had regular soda in many years, so I really appreciate this not being too sweet.

The key here is the powerful ginger taste that’s natural and not artificial. I saw a few other shoppers that wrote of their appreciation for the naturalness of the brand’s sodas, and being that they contain stevia, it’s good to know it’s not overpowering as it can be in some beverages.

I checked up on an Olipop Vintage Cola review on the brand’s website to see if the same natural taste held, and according to customers, it does.

Seeking some more feedback on other flavors, I headed to Amazon and looked into the Strawberry Vanilla soda. With 833 buyers awarding the drink 4.3/5 stars, it’s safe to say this one’s a winner too. I’ve included the rating snapshot below too if you’re interested in seeing how that score came to be.

  • 5 stars: 70%
  • 4 stars: 11%
  • 3 stars: 8%
  • 2 stars: 4%
  • 1 star: 6%

Many wrote of the great flavor, and one said it tasted like marshmallow, while another said it was “absolutely delicious,” and the “best tasting soda” they’ve ever had. Of its benefits of kicking chemical-laden drinks to the curb, one Olipop soda review read, “what a great way to get that carbonation fix in a healthy way.

That’s a really important part of why this brand was created. It’s great that, unlike flavored fizzy waters, Olipop does more than provide a carbonation fix—it’s good for your gut, overall wellness, and waistline.

An Olipop soda review on California.com backed this theory up, stating, “unlike other bubbly beverages, Olipop doesn’t leave me wanting more or feeling like I have withdrawals from the sugary soda I crave.”

Sugar and caffeine cause spikes and crashes in blood sugar, and you won’t get that with this brand. It also shouldn’t have you craving other sugary sweets since it contains a balance of natural sweeteners and real sugar from fruit juice.

From what I’ve read, there aren’t any cons associated with Olipop. Taste will always be a personal preference, but from our research, even those who didn’t expect to like the natural soda were pleasantly surprised.

Is Olipop Worth It?

Olipop Soda Review

It’s one thing for a natural product to do good, and another thing entirely that it tastes good. Olipop proves that health supplements can actually do both, and I’ve found heaps of reviews to back that up.

Bursting with beneficial prebiotics, fiber, and most importantly, flavor, Olipop delivers a healthy dose of digestive help or simply serves as a delicious and refreshing treat.

Though not super cheap, as it wouldn’t be—it’s essentially a bottle of prebiotics plus a canned beverage in one—it’s not out of the realm of affordable. Plus, if you subscribe, you’ll save an extra 15%, and judging on feedback, it looks like those who try it have found this service quite handy.

FAQ

Olipop Soda Review

Who owns Olipop?

David Lester and Ben Goodwin own Olipop.

What’s the difference between a prebiotic and a probiotic?

You may have seen the word “probiotic” pop up around the web, in the grocery store, or on the backs of certain wellness products. If you’ve never stopped to find out what they really are, past simply being good for your health, I’m here to help.

Probiotics are actually bacteria, but before you grimace in disgust, they’re the good kind, hence, the prefix, “pro.” Humans are actually filled with healthy bacteria that live in our intestines, make vitamins, help us digest food, and fight off the bag guys.

Health gurus have been touting the positive effects of probiotics over the last 20 years, and you very well may take a daily supplement to up your body’s natural defenses. While that’s all well and good, just like how we need a constant influx of beneficial bacteria, those little bacteria need their own nourishment. And that nourishment comes in the form of prebiotics.

Our bodies can’t actually break down prebiotics, so when we ingest them, they happily make their way through our bodies and down into our digestive tract where they’re gobbled down by the hungry residents who dwell there.

Why is there fibre in Olipop?

Olipop is all about digestive health and feeding the beneficial bacteria that live there. To do that, prebiotics are needed, and often, prebiotics and fiber are one and the same.

In addition to feeding probiotics in your gut, fiber helps clean things up and encourage healthy digestion and elimination.

Is it OK to drink more than one can of Olipop a day?

The brand suggests starting with one Olipop per day, then trying two or more if everything checks out.

Due to the fibrous nature of the drinks, as well as the inclusion of certain ingredients like slippery elm bark and chicory root, Olipop may have a slight laxative effect if consumed in large quantities.

Does Olipop ship internationally?

Not yet! But hopefully soon.

What is Olipop’s Shipping Policy?

Right now, Olipop only ships within the US, offering Standard and Same-Day Delivery (for some areas) for $4. Orders that total over $50 qualify for free shipping and the brand will fill you in on the delivery time frame at checkout.

What is Olipop’s Return Policy?

Swapping from soda to Olipop may be a bit of a transitional curve. To experience the drink at its best, the brand suggests chilling it in the fridge for at least 12 hours before sipping. If, when you crack it open and take a sip, you still don’t think it’s your thing, get in touch with the brand within 30 days of purchase to get a full refund.

Considering Olipop is a perishable product, that’s pretty cool of the brand. Plus, it’ll even refund your shipping. I should note that the company will only take returns if you bought from its site, not from outside places like the Sprouts Olipop section.

The brand can only issue a refund if it’s your first time having a particular flavor. Meaning that if you buy Strawberry Vanilla once, like it, then order a second batch but change your mind, you won’t qualify for your money back.

To figure out which flavors tickle your fancy, Olipop suggests ordering a Variety Pack before committing to 12 of one particular type.
